Moeso and Soeripno turned against Soekarno and Hatta
"The people have the power"
THE communist leader Moeso [Musso] replied over Radio Gelora Pemoeda to the speech that President Soekarno delivered on 19 September over Radio Djokja. Moeso, who opened his speech with the Merdeka greeting, announced that the people of the Madioen region now themselves hold the power in their hands and have been enabled to lead the national revolution themselves. Until now this was done by another "class", said Moeso, namely by the "bourgeois". Moeso asked whether the Indonesian people can still agree with the policy of Hatta and Soekarno, who, he said, in fact conduct a policy of capitulation towards the Dutch and the English and want to sell the fatherland to the American capitalists. Until now Soekarno, Hatta and associates have acted at their own discretion, while the Indonesian people themselves began the struggle against imperialism.
Moeso pointed out that [Unreadable] came to power in the Japanese period and, he said, colluded with the Japanese. In his speech Moeso said, among other things, the following: "Our revolution is under national communist leadership. It turns against imperialism in general. This imperialism was the main cause of the worsening of the political and economic situation in the republic and of the powerlessness of the people, and the workers in particular, to rise out of the misery which is the result of Dutch and Japanese domination. More than twenty million Indonesian women became widows because their husbands became romusha in the Japanese period. Soekarno now has the people of Indonesia choose between Soekarno and Moeso. The people's answer is: Soekarno and Hatta are servants of Japan and America," said Moeso.
Speech by Djokosoejono
Colonel Djokosoejono [Djokosujono], who has been appointed by the communists as "military governor of the Madioen region", said that the communist coup is not a rebellion but an improvement on what Soekarno and Hatta have done — so according to a report from a communist radio transmitter in republican territory. "The main aim of the revolution is to carry out a purge of the republican army of the reactionary and colonial groups," said Djokosoejono, who further accused the republican army of having carried out a purge campaign among the young revolutionary armed forces in Solo, and in response to that the communists arrested the colonial and reactionary groups in Madioen. Djokosoejono was head of the republican bureau for the people's armed forces (Laskars Pemoeda's). On the evening of 20 September Soeripno, the former republican representative in Prague, spoke over Radio Gelora Pemoeda. This broadcast of the already weak transmitter was however heavily jammed. Soeripno observed that the Soekarno-Hatta government has adopted an anti-communist attitude, which, said Soeripno, is equivalent to an anti-democratic attitude.
He expressed his thanks to the fighting organisations that had given their cooperation to the coup at Madioen. With regard to Soekarno's remark that the Indonesian people must choose between Soekarno-Hatta or Moeso, Soeripno said that the people are not obliged to choose but need only continue the struggle for independence.
Worried communists!
"Radio Gelora Pemoeda" cried out on 18 Sept.: "We are worried that our government is becoming fascist-militarist, for authority is combined in one person (Hatta), who is at the same time vice-president, premier and minister of defence. They are traitors who delivered tens of millions of their kinsmen to the cruel Japanese as romusha. Unity is necessary, but must not lead to slavery. We ask ourselves whether there has been no consultation between the Djokja government and the Dutch for the elimination of the left wing." From a commentary in Dutch from the same radio: "We now know that the Dutch are cooperating with the republican government to suppress the people. The fascist and collaborator Hatta is now trying to use the republic for the suppression of the workers and farmers. Madioen has risen for the destruction of all enemies of the revolution. Today the revolution has broken out, the police, the M.P. and the army have been disarmed by the people. The workers and farmers have formed a new government. The weapons will not rest until the whole of Indonesia is liberated. The hour of the revolution has struck."
