De guerillas vindt men thans overal in Sulawesi.
Bovendien is mr.

Guerrilla question under the microscope
Avoid conflicts by withdrawing
THE interdepartmental commission under the leadership of Mr Makmun Sumadipradja, senior official of the Ministry of Home Affairs of the RI, recently had a meeting with Mrs Lot Salawati Daud, who on 30 October last was again set free after a detention of ten days. Whether this release rests on the fact that 29 parties and people's organisations submitted a protest and demanded the immediate release of the ex-guerrilla leader is not known. We also cannot yet establish whether this release was the wish of the interdepartmental commission.
It is logical that the interdepartmental commission will try to make contact with the guerrilla leaders and, seen from this standpoint, the release of the ex-guerrilla leader is entirely right. For as long as Lot S. Daud is held, the above-mentioned commission will get no chance to meet the guerrilla leaders. We can now say with certainty that shortly Mr Makmun Sumadipradja and associates will be able to talk with the leaders. Knowing Mr Makmun Sumadipradja, we already dare to say that he — although he will still meet many difficulties — will succeed in his mission, provided Mr Makmun treats the question psychologically. For the well-organised guerrilla fighting force has made as its main demand that the guerrillas be allowed to become one official fighting body under the name of brigade "Hasanuddin", which in the meantime, before the interdepartmental commission [Unreadable] was set up, has already been recognised by the Apri in Makassar. When the report came that the interdepartmental commission would investigate this question, some distrust arose among the guerrillas and they are now waiting for confirmation from the government, represented by the above-mentioned commission. The guerrilla leadership will certainly be willing to give all cooperation if the aforementioned demand is met. The headquarters, now established in the vicinity of Pare-Pare, will presumably this week still receive the departmental commission to hold talks.
Withdrawn
The "Hassanuddin" forces are scattered everywhere. They have withdrawn into the mountains, since they wish to fight the Apri as little as possible. In the mountains they fight against the irregular gangs that make the regions of Bone, Malia (Gowa), Mamasa and Wadj[o] (Toraja) unsafe. Thus the "Hassanuddin" force acts on its own initiative against the ill-intentioned elements that try to fish in troubled waters. Many will wonder whether the demand of the "Hassanuddin" fighting group will indeed be realised. In our modest opinion the interdepartmental commission, if it looks at the situation from a psychological point of view, will grant the demand. On Java we have, after all, the "Siliwangi" division and other names of divisions and/or brigades. The "Hassanuddin" fighting group should be compared with these. The spokesman of the guerrilla leadership recently declared to "Antara" that the "Hassanuddin" division does not regard the Apri as an enemy. Far from it! After all, it fought for the republic against the Dutch armed forces! Indeed, the guerrillas fought the KL and KNIL because they wished to remain loyal to the republic. The fighting that took place between the official armed forces and the "Hassanuddin" members arose because the former undertook the so-called cleansing actions in Sulawesi. And in order not to shed blood needlessly, the "Hassanuddin" force withdrew into the mountains and the forests. Only when they are forced to save their lives do they take up arms, otherwise not. If the guerrillas may bear the name of members of the "Hassanuddin" brigade (at first their demand was a "Hassanuddin division"), they are prepared to be incorporated into the Apri. The guerrillas are now found everywhere in Sulawesi. One meets them not only in South Celebes but also in Central and North Celebes. In South Celebes, for example, there are at least 12 divisions, which are led by an ex-TNI officer with military academy training in Djokja. Many do not agree with the measures taken by the Apri against the guerrillas. A few members of parliament have spoken in favour of a non-armed solution. The head of the daerah of South Celebes, who was recently with the secretary-general of the Ministry of Defence, disapproved of any form of armed force. Mr Kendangan, senior official of the political department of the Ministry of Home Affairs, declared after his trip to Makassar that the guerrilla question must be solved as quickly as possible. The solution can best take place if one does not lose sight of the [Unreadable] political and [Unreadable] logical factors. When we study the history of the guerrillas in South Celebes, we must admit that they do have the right to see their demand granted, provided they have no evil intentions, and this is evident from the fact that they have avoided armed contact with the Apri as much as possible. Moreover Mr Makmun Sumadipradja (already before his departure for Celebes) is optimistically inclined and we believe that he will succeed in his mission, so that the disorders in Celebes will soon belong to the past.
