PROBLEEM AUGUSTUS-ARREST ANTEN
Doel: Spoedige vrijlating van gevangenen
Surabaja, 27 Aug. Mej.

PROBLEM OF THE AUGUST ARRESTEES
Aim: Speedy release of prisoners
Surabaja, 27 Aug. At a press conference held on Tuesday morning in the press room at Surabaja the committee for victims of the August raids announced that it plans to hold, on Sunday 7 September, with the cooperation of all organisations affiliated to the Sobsi and other groupings sympathising with it, a mass demonstration in front of the residences of the governor of East Java and of the commander of the Brawidjaja division.
Aim of the demonstration
The aim of this demonstration is to lend force to the committee's demand to release all August arrestees throughout Indonesia soon. During these demonstrations a resolution will be presented to the governor and to the division commander. The Surabaja branch of the Sobsi has already promised the committee its full cooperation. The committee takes full responsibility for these demonstrations, it was announced at the press conference.
Delegation to premier and Minister of Defence
At the press conference Miss Sulami, secretary of the committee, who was part of the delegation that recently visited Djakarta to obtain information from the government about the fate of the arrestees, gave an explanation. She said that Prime Minister Wilopo had told the delegation on 19 August that he could not name a date on which the prisoners would be released. The premier had added, according to her, that the problem of the arrestees now has the full attention of the government. Talks will be held with the Minister of Defence, to whose competence this question belongs. In response to reports about a secret instruction for the release of the prisoners, the prime minister declared that there is only one instruction and that is the instruction that was read out in parliament at the time. On 20 August the delegation had an interview with the Minister of Defence. He declared that he was prepared to look for a solution to the problem of the arrestees. He promised to hold talks with the agencies concerned.
Something is not right
Miss Sulami stated at the press conference that something is not right with the release of the arrestees. This, said Miss Sulami, is a consequence of "the bankruptcy policy of the Sukiman-Wibisono government". The Wilopo government is now responsible for this. Miss Sulami considered it highly likely that the promises of the government now being given will turn out to be mere empty phrases. If this is correct, the people's trust in the government will be shaken, she said. Miss Sulami further said she was of the opinion that the cause of all this must be sought in the RTC agreement, of which the Sukiman/Wibisono policy is a consequence. This policy is aimed at suppressing the people. In connection with this the committee is of the opinion that the time has now come to bring about the release of the prisoners through the struggle of the whole people. For, she said, the August raids were in essence nothing other than a general attack on the Indonesian people, which is consistently anti-imperialist. Asked, Miss Sulami stated that the action is also being conducted in the interest of the thirteen Chinese citizens who are held prisoner on the basis of the SOB [state of war and siege].
The demonstrations
The committee, it was further declared, is fully aware that the demonstrations that will take place on 7 September may have serious consequences. Thus it may happen that the masses cannot be kept under control. Of course everything will be done by the committee to let the demonstrations proceed peacefully, it was declared. The demonstrators, according to the plans, will assemble at 9 o'clock in the morning at the Taman Surija (the square in front of the town hall). In East Java there are at present still 62 SOB arrestees, among them thirteen Chinese citizens, in custody. They are housed in the Bubutan camp and in the prison at Malang.
