=== [Page 1] === The latest news Djakarta 4 May (Antara) The Union of employees at banks in Indonesia has proclaimed a strike for 6 May. The ambassador of Pakistan, Choudry, is said to have expressed, during a conversation with the former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Subardjo, the fear that the Vietminh troops will carry out a breakthrough that could be dangerous for Malaya and Indonesia. The ladies Setiati Surasto, Maasje Siwi and Kartinah left today for the congress of the International Federation of Democratic Women's Associations [Women's International Democratic Federation] in Copenhagen. The Premier and the other P.N.I. ministers from the Wilopo cabinet held a discussion with the P.N.I. members of parliament about the 17 October affair and the problems arising from it. Djakarta 5 May (Antara) Whether or not to ask a vote of confidence concerning the government's policy on the 17 October affair was discussed this morning at a meeting of the cabinet with the parliamentary factions of the government parties. Neither the P.N.I. nor the Masjumi can agree with the cabinet's intention to put the question of confidence. At the meeting between the cabinet and the parliamentary factions of the government parties the faction leaders were of the opinion that putting the question of confidence is unnecessary and undesirable. The central board of the P.N.I. issued a statement saying that the government can continue its work to resolve the 17 October affair and that putting the question of confidence on it is not considered necessary. Premier Wilopo declared that the reason which led the government to consider whether the question of confidence should be put in connection with its policy on the 17 October affair is that the government, under the present difficult circumstances, considers a clear pronouncement by parliament necessary. Djody Gondokusumo, chairman of the section for foreign affairs in parliament, returned to Djakarta after a study trip through Japan, stating that Japan can again be considered able to pay the war reparations to Indonesia. Ir Djuanda, Minister of Communications, returned from his trip to Hongkong, Bangkok and Manila and declared that in his opinion the expansion of air connections with these countries can be brought about. Djakarta 6 May (Antara) The workers of the Nederlandsche Handelsbank, the Nationale Handelsbank, the Escompto and the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China went on strike today. The Islamic party P.S.S.I. [PSII] made known that there is no reason at all for it to give confidence to the government's policy on the resolution of the 17 October affair. Mr Sunarjo was elected, as successor to Djody Gondokusumo, chairman of the section for foreign affairs in parliament. Well-informed political circles predicted that the cabinet will drop the intention of putting the question of confidence. A separate Indonesian medicine factory will be established in Djakarta, Dr Leimena, Minister of Health, announced. The council of ministers decided to remain in office without asking the vote of confidence of parliament. Anwar Tjokroaminoto, Minister of Social Affairs, who sat in the Wilopo cabinet as representative of the P.S.I.I., has been asked by his party to withdraw from the ministry, since the board of this party no longer wishes to give support to the cabinet. The trade agreement between Indonesia and Poland was signed today. Djakarta 7 May (Antara) President Sukarno spoke before 300 students, professors, ministers, ulama and members of the diplomatic corps at the University of Indonesia on: "The national state and the aspirations of Islam". A representative of Ambon will report tomorrow evening to the section for defence affairs of parliament on internal security on Ambon, especially in connection with the activities of the R.M.S. on 17 April of this year. An Indonesian diplomat who is outside Indonesia has been instructed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to become fully informed of the development of events in Indo-China. The government statement concerning the 17 October affair, which was to be made on 11 May, will not go ahead, since the cabinet has refrained from putting the question of confidence. The solemn signing of the friendship treaty concluded on 5 March 1951 between Indonesia and Pakistan took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
