Onder de aanwezigen bevonden zich 38 Westlrianers. Mevr.

Severing of relations with the Netherlands demanded
"Indonesia not abandoned by its friends"
Djakarta, 6 Dec. At the mass meeting held on Sunday morning on the Merdeka square in Djakarta by the committee for the liberation of West Irian, in cooperation with the central organisation of women's associations, a resolution was adopted demanding the unilateral incorporation of West Irian into Indonesia, the severing of Indonesian-Dutch relations, and the abrogation of the Indonesian-Dutch agreements.
In the resolution, which was read out at the end of the meeting by Mrs Sardjono [Umi Sardjono], the government is further urged to declare the presence of the Dutch in West Irian to be aggression. It is further urged that a provincial administration be established for West Irian. It is also urged that the government act drastically against those persons who have clearly shown that they support Dutch colonialism in its attempts to maintain domination in West Irian, such as for example Mr Sahetapy Engel. The various parties and popular groupings are further urged to preserve and strengthen unity in the struggle for the liberation of West Irian. Finally the resolution appeals to the governments and peoples of the world to support Indonesia's demand for the liberation of West Irian from Dutch domination.
Tens of thousands of people, carrying numerous banners and posters with the demand for the return of West Irian to Indonesian territory, attended this mass meeting. Among those present were 38 West Irianese. Mrs Sudarman Hadikusumo, chairwoman of the committee for the liberation of West Irian and also chairwoman of the Wanita Demokrat, Mrs Kartowijono, chairwoman of the communist faction, Mrs Sutedjo of the women's section of the P.S.T.I., Mr Abdul Madjid, P.N.I. member, who on this occasion acted as representative of the West Irianese, and Mrs Sardjono of the Gerwani addressed the crowd.
Resolution handed over
Immediately after the meeting a procession went to the official residence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Sunarjo, where Mrs Sudarman Hadikusumo handed the resolution to the minister. Despite the armed police guard, the demonstrators, shouting "Long live Minister Sunarjo", "Liberate West Irian" etc., had managed to push through as far as the grounds of the ministerial residence. Mayor Sudiro was also present at the handing over of the resolution.
The demonstrators then continued in procession to the presidential palace, but as the gate was closed they went to the Dutch High Commission, which was likewise closed. In his speech on receiving the resolution Minister Sunarjo said that he would have it conveyed as soon as possible to the government and the Indonesian delegation in New York, and added that through this demonstration and those held everywhere else in Indonesia the eyes of the world will be opened to the fact that the claim to West Irian is indeed a national claim, and not that of only one or two persons, as is intended to be suggested from certain quarters. Minister Sunarjo said that the latter had created the impression, in circles of foreigners in this country and abroad, that the claim to West Irian is only that of the president and the vice-president. "Thanks to the tireless efforts of the government and the delegation in New York, however, we have succeeded in convincing the world that the claim to West Irian is indeed a claim of the whole Indonesian people, who act in unison in this," said Minister Sunarjo.
Support in the U.N.
Concerning the support that the Indonesian delegation receives in the U.N., Minister Sunarjo said that the adoption of the Indian resolution has shown that Indonesia, which has always stood in the forefront of the striving for peace and justice, is not abandoned by its friends, a fact that is a stimulus to conduct the struggle for West Irian in a more orderly manner. By showing more unity, said Minister Sunarjo, we come ever closer to the decisive moment in which even the Dutch will see that, with regard to the West Irian question, the talks must be resumed. Finally Minister Sunarjo said he was convinced that time is on Indonesia's side and can no longer be stopped. "According to the will of the people, and once again the will of the people," said Minister Sunarjo, "the government and the delegation will bring the West Irian problem to a settlement."
Mrs Kartowijono
Mrs Kartowijono, the general chairwoman of the Perwari, said in her speech that by dominating West Irian the Netherlands wants to continue its whiteman's policy, the policy of domination of the coloured race by the white race. Just as a disease is felt by our whole body, so the domination of West Irian is felt by the whole Indonesian people. Concerning Von Baluseck's statements that Indonesia pursues a fascist policy, the speaker said that this accusation is more applicable to the Netherlands itself, which has raised a "Papuan army" "to strike at Indonesia with it". The speaker said further that as a result of the R.T.C. agreement the Indonesian people now have to suffer a great deal. The women who run the household, said the speaker, know only too well how hard they have it in their daily lives. In the present struggle for West Irian, however, Indonesian women are prepared to sacrifice themselves, their sons and their loved ones for the fatherland. The speaker then appealed to the women in the Netherlands and the whole world to heed the call of the Indonesian women, who are determined to bring the struggle for West Irian to a good end and will therefore shrink from nothing. In particular the speaker appealed to Dutch women to reject all colonial practices of their country and to oppose every act that could endanger cooperation between the peoples of the world. The speaker said that Dutch women must ensure that the Dutch government abandons its power politics, which is contrary to the U.N. Charter and runs against human rights.
On behalf of the Irianese
The representative of the Irianese people, Mr Abdul Madjid (P.N.I.), declared in his speech that during the Japanese occupation the people of Irian, without possessing a single weapon, succeeded in driving the Japanese out of some areas of West Irian. "This struggle was later continued against the Dutch rulers, since the people saw that these rulers cannot satisfy the urge for freedom." The Papuan brigade, which was called into being by the Dutch in the Second World War to fight the Japanese, was later disbanded by the Dutch, since they did not succeed in making them fight their own brothers. Concerning the Dutch attempts to strengthen the defence in West Irian, the speaker said that these will not be able to break the urge of the Irianese people. As long as imperialism still exists in the world, said the speaker, there will also be disorder in the world.
The member of parliament of the communist faction, Utarjo, stressed in his speech the necessity of unity of all groupings in Indonesia, nationalist as well as communist and religious, since Indonesia's struggle for West Irian has now reached an important phase. Concerning the statements of the ministers Luns and Staf, the speaker said that "on this day we must also give a radical answer to them, which," as the speaker said, "must be equivalent to a death sentence on Dutch imperialism".
