Not Dr Hatta but Mr Sumanang
In connection with reports in the capital's press that Dr Hatta has not yet rendered account and responsibility for the funds of the "Fonds Kemerdekaan Indonesia" (Fund for the financing of the freedom struggle), the secretary of Dr Hatta, I. Wangsawidjaja, gave the following statement: The "Fonds Kemerdekaan Indonesia" founded at the beginning of the revolution under Hatta's leadership received a different name at the proclamation, namely "Fonds Nasional", because independence then became a fact. All possessions and responsibilities of the "Fonds Kemerdekaan Indonesia" were transferred to the new fund, headed by Mr Sumanang, namely the "Fonds Nasional". Meanwhile Mr Sumanang has declared to the press that the "Fonds Kemerdekaan" was transformed during the evacuation of the Republican government from the capital to Jogjakarta into the "Fonds Nasional", of which he was appointed chairman.
The inventory of the former "Fonds Kemerdekaan", which consisted of two suitcases with gold and silver jewellery, was then conveyed via the State Bank in Jogjakarta to Djakarta, and later transferred to the "Fonds Nasional". The contents of both suitcases were carefully registered by a committee consisting of Messrs Zarkasi, at the time a businessman in Jogjakarta, Wiwoho, now ambassador in Belgium, and Sastrodigdo, the former director of the state bank in Jogjakarta. A part of the gold jewellery, to a weight of one kg, was sent to the late Djohan Djohor to buy up the historic building, Pegangsaan Timur 56. Later it appeared, however, that the purchase of the building had already been completed, so that the late Djohan Djohor repaid the gold jewellery in money to a value of approx. Rp. 36,000. Now the Fonds Nasional has been dissolved [text garbled], but the relevant documents, although incomplete since some papers were lost during the second Dutch military action, are available for inspection in Jogjakarta. On the board of the former "Fonds Nasional" in Jogja sat, among others, Messrs Soekono, Zarkasi and Honggowongso. Other branches of the fund went astray during the second military action. "When the Dutch troops entered Jogja we tried to hide the jewellery as much as possible, but a number of silver jewels were found by the Dutch at my home at Bedji 33 and taken with them," said Mr Sumanang. He himself was also arrested by the Dutch. Mr Sumanang said that the Dutch did not find out that there were also gold jewels. "The gold and the remaining silver jewellery, to a weight of about one kg, with a value of Rp. 30,000 to Rp. 40,000, were used on my responsibility for the guerrilla against the Dutch forces that occupied Jogja at that time. Because one had to work in secret, no clear account could be rendered, but there are still persons who are informed about this."
[...] Latief Hendraningrat, the former military attaché in Washington, who at the time led the guerrilla north of Jogja, can be asked for information about the "Fonds Nasional". Also the wife of Sajuti Melik, Mrs Trimurti [S.K. Trimurti], can supply information about what happened to the fund, since her husband, when he was hit by a bullet during a guerrilla action, received the necessary medicines with the money of this fund. From this fund the ceremony of the return of the Sultan of Jogja after the withdrawal of the Dutch troops was also paid for. Therefore the Sultan can possibly supply some information about this. Further, the Antara correspondent Soekrisno, who at the time also reported on some secret messages, among others those of the events [...], can be called as witness. Finally the former board members of the "Fonds Nasional" will supply the necessary information. In conclusion Mr Sumanang says: "All responsibility with regard to the gold jewellery transferred to the national fund rests on my person, and Hatta stands entirely outside it. If account must be asked, then I am the only person who comes into consideration, not Hatta."
