Text

=== [Page 1] === The Irian question Mrs. Rie Lips Odinot, member of parliament for the Dutch Communist Party and board member of the Dutch Women's Movement, who attended the congress of Gerwis, expressed to the President the sympathy of "the peace-loving part of the Dutch people, which fully supports the national struggle of the Indonesian people". She expressed the hope that good cooperation and understanding between Indonesia and the Netherlands would arise and continue to exist. President Soekarno replied that a good understanding between Indonesia and the Netherlands would only be possible if all political and psychological barriers between the two countries were removed. One of the greatest political barriers standing between the two countries is the West Irian question. "You spoke of the ever-growing peace-loving section of the Dutch people that is rallying behind the Indonesian national struggle. I hope that this section will keep growing and will so direct the Dutch political line that the Netherlands comes to the full understanding that, as long as West Irian has not been returned to Indonesia, no good understanding between the Netherlands and Indonesia is possible".
