Text

=== [Page 1] === Supplementary statements The Pengadilan Asli [customary court] was composed of the district head, a kampong head as chairman and four kampong heads as members. At Tuesday's session supplementary statements were taken from the witnesses, accusers and accused. The supplementary investigation showed that Maisuri never let it be known that she wanted to marry Hadji Achmad, nor that she ever said she would marry him if he would give her a house and Rp. 1,000 in cash. It further turned out that the marriage was arranged by H. Achmad himself, his second wife Azisah, Maisuri's father and a certain Annah who acted as intermediary, while Maisuri herself and her mother were left out of it. The Maisuri affair, which has stirred up much dust, has now, as is known, become a national issue through the doing of the Gerwani and other women's organisations, which brought it to the attention of the government. The progressive women's organisations in South Sumatra regard this case as a breakthrough against the complicated conservative family system in which the man occupies a privileged place to the detriment of the woman.
