Sardjono.

Chairwoman of Gerwani: A political background to Fatmawati's divorce request
The chairwoman of the central board of the Gerwani (left-oriented Indonesian women's association), Mrs. Umi Sardjono, declared to the press on Wednesday that the Gerwani regrets that certain groups have systematically made attempts to persuade Mrs. Fatmawati Soekarno to ask for a divorce from the president. Mrs. Sardjono declared that the said groups have taken this path to serve their own political interests, which are in line with the aims of colonialism, namely the fragmentation of national unity, the besmirching of the president's name and the creation of a gulf between the president and the people.
According to Mrs. Sardjono the Gerwani is of the opinion that Mrs. Fatmawati's decision to ask for a divorce from the head of state is a private matter between President Soekarno and his wife, so that everyone should keep out of it. Whether the divorce is realised is also a question between the president and Mrs. Fatmawati herself. The principle of a marriage not under coercion is always upheld by the Gerwani, so that any interference or pressure can be regarded as a violation of personal freedom, said Mrs. Sardjono.
