Parliament session: Bills concerning daerah affairs
During the general deliberations in parliament on the bill concerning the formation of autonomous regions in Central Sumatra, the members of parliament Zainal Abidin Ahmad (Masjumi), Mrs. Suwarti (P.K.I.), Djuir Muhammad (PSI) and Abdulhajat (Progressive) spoke.
Member Zainal Abidin Ahmad agreed in principle with approval of the bill. He wished, however, to introduce a few amendments in certain articles.
Mrs. Suwarti, on the other hand, considered the time not yet ripe to draw up the said law, since according to the speaker the present parliament, which is no longer supported by the people, must first be replaced by a parliament that is borne by the Indonesian people. Only after the installation of this new parliament can the bill on the formation of autonomous regions be taken into discussion. Member Djuir Mohammad suggested to the government to revise the bill. According to the speaker the government must first lay a healthy basis for administrative uniformity in Central Sumatra, since without this the introduction of the said law will cause tensions in the administrative government. Member Abdulhajat also did not agree with the bill, in particular with the part dealing with the formation of the regional administrative councils in the areas concerned. Further Abdulhajat asked the government to pay attention to the wish of the population of Djambi to join the province of South Sumatra.
