Member of parliament reports: Copra smuggling on the orders of Colonel Warouw
Proceeds honestly spent for development purposes
The chairman of the defence section of parliament, Lukas Kustario, confirmed to the press that the commander of the 23rd regiment in North Sulawesi, Lieutenant-Colonel Worang, led the large-scale copra smuggling in North Sulawesi with the knowledge of and according to the instructions of the commander of TT-VII Wirabuana, Colonel Warouw.
Mr. Lukas made this statement after an orientation trip in Sulawesi together with other members of the defence section of parliament, Mrs. Ob. Salawati [Salawati Daud] (PKI) and Mansjur (PNI).
As a result of this smuggling, according to Lukas, 69 Japanese-made motor vehicles, 5,000 tons of rice and 400 bales of white goods [textiles] were received, which were distributed among the military and civil agencies in Sulawesi, and further handed out to social institutions. The money obtained was used for the construction of a university building, for the repair of roads, for the equipment of hospitals and for other development purposes in Sulawesi. Lukas declared he had photos of the ceremonial handover of the said goods, which were distributed honestly.
The textiles were distributed among the people and the orphanages, while the 5,000 tons of rice were distributed by Lt.-Col. Worang among some entrepreneurs in North Sulawesi, said Lukas Kustario, who emphatically added that he had not noticed that the money obtained from the copra smuggling had been used for personal enrichment. Through this smuggling the activities of the Chinese, who constantly harm the coconut farmers, have been curtailed, said Lukas Kustario.
According to Lukas Kustario the repair of the roads and the other works carried out with the money obtained from the copra smuggling are proceeding smoothly. When asked, Lukas Kustario declared that the bookkeeping on the money obtained by those concerned is always done precisely, so that they can account for it at any time. Lukas Kustario further declared that the copra smuggling in Sulawesi has now been stopped on the orders of Colonel Warouw.
