Demonstration against Soebandrio; Soekarno will give instructions to authorities
According to Radio Djakarta the military authority has temporarily banned the Indonesian communist party (PKI) in Djakarta and surroundings. The ban does not apply to all of Indonesia as was first assumed. Other pro-communist organisations in the area that have been involved in the "30 September movement" have also been temporarily banned. All leaders of the banned organisations must report before Sunday 24 October to the nearest police station or military posts. Strict measures will be taken against those who do not comply. Shortly before the announcement four lorries were seen in Djakarta with 20 prisoners each kneeling on the floor. In slogans painted in red paint on walls, foreign minister and first deputy premier Dr. Soebandrio and communist leader Aidit were called the "architects of the movement of 30 September". In other places it said "Soebandrio and Aidit are Chinese lackeys". The army continues the "cleansing operations" in Djakarta.
The ban on the PKI was announced by General Umar Wirahadikusumah, the commander of the garrison in Djakarta. According to the general this measure was intended to hasten the restoration of calm and order. Besides the communist party, PKI, the communist youth front, the trade-union federation Sobsi and the women's movement Gerwani are temporarily banned, the latter being accused of having taken part in the torture and murder of six generals.
President Soekarno has determined that all provincial civil and military administrators must gather in Djakarta next Saturday to receive his instructions. Today the commander of the air force, Vice Air Marshal Omar Dhani, will fly to Cambodia, as the beginning of a world trip ordered by Soekarno. Dhani's role in the coup of 30 September is still obscure. Newspapers have reported that Dhani himself brought the leader of the communist party, Aidit, to Central Java at the beginning of the crisis. Contrary to earlier reports Aidit would still be at large and be in East Java.
