Communist Njono: PKI coup hastened by Soekarno's illness
In Indonesia the newspaper of the armed forces has gone into more detail about the prehistory of the coup. It publishes statements that the communist trade-union leader Njono, head of the trade-union centre Sobsi and member of the central committee of the communist party, made under interrogation. From those statements it can be concluded that the plans were already being worked on in July. According to Njono Aidit's announcement that President Soekarno was seriously ill was decisive. An army junta then put full speed behind the preparation of a political upheaval. Njono said that although political action was the joint responsibility of a party triumvirate consisting of Aidit, Lukman and Njoto (editor-in-chief of the Volksdagblad [Harian Rakjat]), the military operations were Aidit's responsibility. Njono said that it was his own task to form a reserve force of 2,000 men in the Djakarta area. He had to seek his people mainly among communists, members of the "People's Youth", members of Sobsi, of the peasant front BTI and the women's auxiliary service Gerwani. It was on the evening of 29 September, said Njono, that he learned from a courier from the communist training camp at Lubang Buaja that they would begin on 1 October at four o'clock at night. According to Njono Aidit thought that discord reigned in the army. Aidit also hoped to get support from non-communist military circles and he expected much especially from the air force. He hoped to be able to move the navy and the police to remain neutral. Looking back, Njono said that the overthrow of the cabinet and the establishment of revolutionary councils had gone according to plan, but that the coup had failed through insufficient tactical preparation of the military phase.
