=== [Page 1] === Atmosphere of coup in Djakarta: Soebandrio under arrest; tanks aim their [guns at ...] The Indonesian army has taken "security measures" with regard to Dr. Soebandrio, minister of foreign affairs. This would amount to placing in protective custody. Twelve other ministers and the third deputy premier Saleh have, "at the request of the people", undergone the same fate. In a radio broadcast General Soeharto announced these measures. They have been taken "not only for the restoration of law and order, but also for the protection of President Soekarno himself". General Soeharto said that the action is directed against the ministers and not against the power of President Soekarno. Earlier in the day the Indonesian army had placed all news media, press, radio and television, under its authority. According to reports from Singapore power is now again fully in the hands of General Soeharto. Today paratroopers and tanks were sent to President Soekarno's Merdeka palace. Army units have occupied Kemajoran airport and all commercial communication centres and ordered them to cease activities. In Djakarta the atmosphere of a coup hangs, although it is assumed that the tanks and the paratroopers have been sent to the palace only in case the presidential bodyguard might decide to turn against Soeharto's measures. The tanks have aimed their barrels at the palace. General Soeharto has appointed Dr. Adam Malik acting minister of foreign affairs, as successor to Dr. Soebandrio who has been taken "into protective custody". This was announced by Radio Djakarta. Malik is a former minister of trade and former ambassador in the Soviet Union. [Names, text partly lost:] Achmadi, Soemarno, Setiadi, Soetomo Astrawinata, Mohammed Bachrodi [?]. The head of the president's security service, Lieutenant-Colonel Sjafei, is also said to be under arrest. General Soeharto said that the measures were taken within the framework of the instructions that President Soekarno gave him last Friday, when the latter asked him to restore "order and law". President Soekarno left Djakarta yesterday again for his palace in Bogor, while students and pupils again marched demonstrating through the streets of the capital. They demand the removal of the communist-minded from the government. It was reported that demonstrators were said to have abducted a few ministers. General Soeharto said in his statement that the direct or indirect participation of the ministers concerned in the coup of October was clearly evident from the testimonies given recently during the trials of the leaders of the coup. He added that for the maintenance of order the resentments of the people towards these ministers must be taken into account. According to Radio Djakarta the ministers concerned are: Soebandrio, Chairul Saleh, Soemardjo, Oei Tjoe Tat, Soerachman, Jusuf Muda Dalam, Armunanto, [...]. The fourth wife of President Soekarno and a number of other prominent Indonesian women arrived yesterday by air from Djakarta in Bangkok, but an official of the Indonesian embassy said that there was no connection between this trip and the political situation in Indonesia. Mrs. Harjati Soekarno, the wife of the air force chief Herlambang and also the wife of the minister of sports Maladi were part of a party of a dozen women. According to the embassy official the group is privately on its way to Mecca. He did not wish, however, to say how long the ladies would stay in Bangkok. On the Banteng Square, the former Waterloo Square, in Djakarta an enormous crowd expressed its agreement with the ban on the communist party. The demonstrators carried banners with the names of students killed during earlier demonstrations.
