=== [Page 1] === And shame Every morning the paras in Solo have one or more enemies of the people appear in front of the town hall. Yesterday it was three members of the Gerwani, the communist women's league that was involved in the massacres in the most dissolute manner. The threesome, dressed as the Manke [?] today, had to lie face down on the sun-baked asphalt. There is always a large public — that does not react, does not jeer, does not show that it understands what is going on. Solo has had a communist administration. The red ex-mayor Utomo Ramelan is imprisoned in the kraton. He had placed party comrades everywhere under him. Now he has been succeeded by a Catholic. Army and police grabbed hundreds of communists by the collar. There were demonstrations against the party. Chinese who rightly or wrongly were accused of having financed the communist propaganda lost their shops in a series of large fires. But the communists, feared until so recently, drove up fear among the people within a few weeks. The abduction of anti-communists got into full swing. High season for the executioners. A wedding guest who had gone for a moment to look at the fire at the communist headquarters did not return alive. The youth organisations that had taken part in demonstrations lost thirteen members. Time and again new disappearances. "Before we are finished with the communists in Solo, we will be three or four months further on", estimated the military commander who had explained to me in Djokja how the algojas [executioners] (according to the information at the army's disposal) bring themselves into the state of mind in which they perform their gruesome work. Whether the commander's estimate may be too optimistic I dare not judge. I seek, for the passivity of the spectators at the humiliation of Karno Gedjig, additional explanations besides the fear and distrust of which I think I have been witness. Solo, although impoverished, is a proud city. Here the old culture is seated. Here in Djokja Javanese civilisation has for centuries been unrivalled. The rest of Java, outside the Principalities [Vorstenlanden], consists of nothing but the "pesisir", the coastal region, where no high forms of life prevail. And what is happening now in Solo, their Kotapradja, their Negari, the Great City? The people are not only afraid, it seems to me, but also ashamed. They would like to close their eyes, forget or deny the terror and the harsh countermeasures. The army does not permit this, nor do the communists. Another four months of struggle? A communist uprising or seizure of power is not to be expected for years after the latest failure; this can be predicted with as much certainty as in '26 and '48. But Solo is not yet free, although it is occupied by the paras in their appropriate jungle clothing.
