=== [Page 1] === The lot of Salawati The sad details of the murder of Pluyter are now well known. Less known in Surabaja is probably the figure of the woman who led the gang in Masamba, Lot Salawati [Salawati Daud], member of the Makassar municipal council. We spoke with a former member of parliament of East Indonesia, who remembers that during the sessions in 1947 a woman always sat in the public gallery. On the balustrade in front of her stood from the opening words until the closing a large handbag in two colours, red and white. That woman was Lot Salawati, very left and very revolutionary. The psychological background of the murder that she committed is much discussed in Makassar. One — incidentally not widely circulated — version seems plausible to us. Salawati took part a few months ago in the Indonesian Women's Congress in Djokja and was there, as a consequence of a tactless manoeuvre, rather emphatically rapped over the knuckles. The same happened to her on her return in Makassar. She must have been depressed and have been looking for a way to rehabilitate herself. Along that path Pluyter's fate ran... Not less bad than the murder is her pernicious influence on children. Political misleading of the youth can have disastrous consequences. Friends of Salawati would like to see it led to her being declared not responsible for her actions, it is said in Makassar. Which would plead neither for the crowd that is represented by Salawati, nor for the body in which she has a seat, namely the Makassar Municipal Council.
