Amir Sjarifoeddin, drs. Soeripno, drs.

Explanation requested: Death sentences Madiun affair
(From our correspondent) On Sunday evening 20 December 1948 "somewhere in the vicinity of Solo" the Communist "leaders" Mr. Amir Sjarifoeddin, Drs. Suripno, Drs. Maruto Darusman, Sardjono, Djokosujono, Oei Gee Hwat, Harjono, Katamhadi, Sukarno, Honomarsono and D. Slamet [Slangkoe] [?], all principal figures in the Madiun rebellion, were shot dead. They were buried in the desa Ngalihan Laloeng, regency of Karanganyar, residency of Surakarta. Together they were buried in a mass grave of 5 x 2 m. In the time of the Madiun rebellion, under the leadership of Musso, who had just returned from Europe, against the authority of the republic of Djokja, nobody asked many questions. Later, when calm had returned, the government of Djokja was often asked to provide information about the events that led to the capture of the communist rebels, their trial and their death. Except for establishing the fact that the instigators of the rebellion had been shot, the Republican government in Djokja has never given a detailed statement about this affair, so that up to this moment there is for instance still doubt about the death of Tan Malaka. The member of parliament Mrs. Mudigdo already interested herself in this affair some time ago and, now that the Republican government of Djokja has in fact taken over affairs in Djakarta and the unitary state Republic of Indonesia has been founded, has made known that she will still call the government to account over it. Meanwhile she has set herself up as advocate of some of the surviving relatives of the shot rebel leaders, who were recently granted permission to have the mortal remains identified and reburied. They are still waiting, however, for official confirmation by the government of the death sentence carried out almost two years ago. They have now taken lawyers on board. Mrs. Mangku, Mrs. Oei Gee Hwat and Mrs. Mudigdo further intend to turn again to premier Natsir with the request for a fuller statement concerning the circumstances that led to the death sentence of the captured communist leaders, among other things the legal provisions on which the death sentence rests, the court that passed the sentences and where the hearing took place. The ladies in question are for this purpose now in Djakarta, but were provisionally unable to get to speak to premier Natsir, who is spending three days of vacation at the country residence in Tjipanas.
