Difficulties expected from guerrilla troops in Celebes
(From our correspondent) Although according to a decree of the government in Djakarta there have formally been no guerrillas in East Indonesia since 1 July last, their number is, according to Mrs. Salawati Daoed [Salawati Daud] — who on behalf of the government has tried to reach agreement with the guerrilla leaders — about 12,000 men, according to a statement made by her in Makassar to "Antara". If no agreement with the "Kesatuan Gerilya Sulawesi Selatan" (Unity Front of the South Celebes Guerrillas) is reached at short notice, all kinds of unpleasantness may occur, said Mrs. Daoed.
In the mountains of South Celebes are now the well-armed guerrillas, who enjoy the support of the population — which, according to earlier reports, is not particularly pleased with the actions of the Indonesian government troops. According to Mrs. Daoed these guerrillas have nothing to do with the "armed forces" of the "Republic of the South Moluccas". This became apparent among other things at the Makassar disturbances of early August last, when the guerrillas descended from the mountains to come to the help of the Indonesian government troops against the rebellious K.N.I.L. units. Afterwards they returned to the mountains, when no agreement on their status proved possible.
