=== [Page 1] === Arrests in East Java: Strict control of the press An official statement published on Saturday in Surabaja announces that on the orders of the Indonesian government a number of persons in East Java have been arrested. It is said that the arrests are not directed against a particular group or ideology. The population is urged to remain calm and to perform its daily work in the normal way. According to Aneta, among the twenty-six arrested are several journalists, among them Go Tjing Hok, editor-in-chief of the "Javapost", which paper in recent weeks has made sensational revelations about the existence of an underground movement in Indonesia that is said to be aimed at the overthrow of the government. Also arrested are the editor-in-chief of the "Trompet", Masjaraket, and of "Thay Khong", Siang Po, as well as three editors of this paper and an editor of the weekly "Demokrasi". Further arrested are the local chairman of the Partai Kommunis Indonesia, Hutapea, two board members of the Surabaja branch and a Dutch demobilised KNIL man. Of the Sobsi, arrested in Surabaja were Surono, who is also chairman of the SBKA (railway personnel union), and board member Sutomo. Among those arrested are finally the chairwoman of the women's organisation "Gerwis", Mrs. Parjani Ilham, the chairman of the Indonesian-Chinese friendship movement and a pupil of the Chinese school. Americans also in custody? The paper of the Masjumi, "Abadi", reports that in the raids in Djakarta two Americans were also said to have been arrested. Neither the attorney-general nor on the American side could Aneta be provided with information on this. The latest arrests were not limited to Surabaja, but extended over the residencies Malang, Bodjonegoro, Madiun and Kediri. The number of arrestees there amounts to 175. The attorney-general, Suprapto, told the daily "Keng Po" that in the present situation the government will not hesitate to take strict measures against all publications in the press that bear the character of "unhealthy" criticism and that can harm the country. "Keng Po" further learned in government circles that one considers a tightening of press control of importance for guaranteeing the security of country and people. Especially the foreign press must now realise that it is only a guest in Indonesia. It must therefore behave as a guest, according to these circles. (According to new guidelines many Chinese papers, among others, belong to the foreign press.) From reports received in Djakarta from the large places in the archipelago it appears that the celebration of 17 August passed everywhere without incidents. The only incident reported is the explosion of a hand grenade in Bandung on Thursday evening, which however caused no victims or damage. The police succeeded in arresting the two perpetrators.
