Hammer and sickle or buffalo head? There are ballot boxes in the jungle too. About 43 million Indonesians will be able to cast their vote on Thursday and make a choice from candidates of 63 parties and groupings in the first general elections. It is expected that slightly less than half of those entitled to vote will go to the polls. According to Reuter the contest will probably be in the first place between the communists, who have announced that they expect to get about 5,000,000 votes, and the Masjumi [Masyumi], which in the opinion of Western circles could unite some 40% of the votes cast. It will thus be between the hammer and sickle (Comm.) and the buffalo head (Islam), for the voters will have to choose from the symbols of the parties, as an aid for the many illiterates. In the provisional people's representation the communists have 19 seats. Some observers are of the opinion that the elections will mean the emergence of a new, powerful communist force in South-East Asia. The predictions are further that the nationalists and the socialists will each get between 10 and 20% of the votes. The socialists have many followers among the intellectual Indonesians. The only other powerful grouping is formed by the 5,000,000 Christian Indonesians, who however are divided into Protestant and Catholic political parties. Indonesian women, too, have come forward as a political force, albeit within the existing political parties. The final results of the elections will probably not be known within two months. Among the voters are primitive tribes in East Borneo. Officials left Djakarta for Borneo two months ago to bring the ballot boxes to every corner of the jungle. The minister of information has already warned of possible provocations by "a certain group". He had already noted whisper campaigns and intimidation, he said.
