=== [Page 1] === For the first time I also saw a poster against Mrs Soebandrio, who is at the head of the federation of Indonesian women's organisations. Mrs Soebandrio led a protest procession some time ago against the high prices of foodstuffs, and, picking up on that, the poster stated: "Mrs Soebandrio, let us now demonstrate for once." The slogan refers to the fact that the federation of women's organisations has still not proceeded to suspend the communist women's league, the Gerwani. One of the numerous Djakarta dailies was also able to report that the communist leaders Njoto and Lukman were staying this week with Dr Soebandrio in his house on the Djalan Diponegoro, not far from the Dutch embassy. This report ties in with rumours that President Soekarno had charged his minister of foreign affairs with an acceptable reorganisation of the communist party (PKI). The chances of such a renewal have however become very small, and it looks rather as though the "kom" [communism] of President Soekarno's "nasakom" will be missing for the time being. Likewise resident on the Djalan Diponegoro is Dr Mohammed Hatta, former vice-president of the Indonesian republic, whom I spoke with for half an hour. Dr Hatta, still an untouchable figure in Indonesian society, can move freely in turbulent Djakarta and said that he had recognised the run-up to the recent events for quite some time. He referred to the steady infiltration of communists into all sorts of government bodies and named specifically the often catastrophic attempts to influence and supplement the government's land reform programme. He said that it often came down to communists annexing pieces of government land and cultivating them on their own initiative, without expertise, so that the results were almost always lamentable. In some cases these annexation attempts led to the death of some of those involved.
