The American Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, who arrived on Monday at Djakarta by aircraft from Colombo, after having attended the SEATO conference in Karachi and held talks with Prime Minister Nehru in New Delhi, paid a visit of one hour to President Soekarno. In a short statement Dulles said: "We have seen with satisfaction the work done by your country and other new independent states in Asia to form stable governments, to develop your own democratic institutions and to maintain your independence." Mr Dulles was certain that he would return to the U.S. with a better understanding of the successes achieved and of the problems awaiting a solution in Indonesia. Some two dozen Indonesians who had stationed themselves outside the fences of Kemajoran shouted "Abolish SEATO" when Dulles went from the aircraft to the restaurant to meet the authorities. They resumed their shouting when Dulles left the restaurant to go to the building of the American embassy. One of the demonstrators, a young woman who belongs to the left-leaning women's organisation "Gerwani", threw a piece of paper at Dulles's car. She was detained by the police for questioning. Dulles paid no attention to the incident. Dulles has invited Soekarno to pay a visit to the United States. Soekarno has accepted the invitation, but no decision has yet been taken on the date of the visit. An hour after his arrival in Djakarta Dulles paid a visit to President Soekarno at the Merdeka palace. High-ranking officials of the American Department of State accompanying Secretary Dulles on his short visit to Indonesia have informally offered Indonesia American economic assistance.
