=== [Page 1] === General Spoor has declared to the press regarding the communist coup at Madioen [Madiun] that the Dutch army authorities are watching the situation closely. He considered it not impossible that the communist influence would spill over into areas under Dutch control. In official circles there is no idea of the size of the rebelling troops. Gen. Spoor likewise could not say how great the communist influence is among the troops of the Republic, but the general considered it plausible that it exists. "It is the policy of the Republic to infiltrate Republican forces again into the areas under Dutch authority and from that side attempts will also be made to infiltrate communist fighters." Infiltrating troops we will push back behind the status quo line, said the Dutch army commander. With regard to the discontent in the army Sjahrir said: "The main sources of discontent for certain groups were the nationalisation plans, which incidentally had been prepared by Sjarifoeddin, whereby the Pembela organisations (the youth fighting forces) were at last pushed away again." Colonel Djojosoejono was the head of the bureau of the fighting organisations (this Djojosoejono is now military governor of Madioen). Finally Mr Sjahrir said that he had already wanted to travel to Djokja a week ago at the request of Hadji Agoes Salim, the republican minister of foreign affairs, and Moh. Roem, chairman of the republican negotiating delegation, but that defects in aircraft had prevented the journey. The highest administrative authorities at Batavia, among others the deputy lieutenant governor-general, Mr Abdoel Kadir, and General Spoor, met this morning for a discussion of the latest development in the republic. The working committee of the K.N.I.P. [KNIP] has adopted, by 25 votes to 1, a law by which Soekarno is invested for three months with special powers to combat communism. "It will be extremely difficult to recapture Madioen, unless the Republican Sixth Division, stationed in the eastern part of the Republican territory, provides support in time," declared a reliable Republican observer at Batavia. The command of the Sixth Division is located about a hundred kilometres north-east of Madioen. In his speech on radio Gelora Pemoeda [Pemuda] (transmitter in communist hands) Moeso [Musso] said among other things: "Our revolution is under national-communist leadership. It turns against imperialism in general. This imperialism is the main cause of the worsening of the political and economic situation in the Republic and of the inability of the people and the workers in particular to raise themselves out of the misery which is the result of Dutch and Japanese domination. More than 20 million Indonesian women have become widows because their husbands became 'romusha' during the Japanese period. Soekarno now lets the Indonesian people choose between Soekarno and Moeso. The answer of the people is: Soekarno and Hatta are servants of Japan and America," said Moeso. [Translator's note: the headline-level context "The coup in the Republic: opinions of Gen.
