Fierce criticism of the "palace clique". The delegation of women who met on Friday and Saturday about the much-disputed marriage of President Soekarno to Mrs Soewondo paid a visit to the president's palace on Monday. The delegation of four ladies, led by Mrs Kortowijono [Kartowijono], chairwoman of the Perwari, stayed an hour at the palace. No statements were made about what was discussed. Meanwhile Soekarno's marriage remains the centre of attention. Also outside Indonesia, mainly in Malaya and the Philippines, the daily papers devote front-page space to reports on this marriage. The Indonesian daily press is divided into two camps, one of which deplores the marriage as "not fitting for a head of state" and the other holds that "Soekarno is entirely free to marry a second wife".
The moderate paper "Keng Po" warns that the political leaders and the press, through all kinds of trifles of little importance for the course of history, lose sight of the broad line. People get worked up about the president's private affairs, while in fact all attention should be directed at the political symptoms that recall the situation before the outbreak of the communist uprising at Madioen [Madiun] in 1948, according to the paper. "The fuss made about the president's private affairs will not only bind the PKI (the communist party in Indonesia) more closely to the president, but will also favour the PKI, because general attention is distracted from the preparations that the communist party is making in silence," according to this paper. The paper "Doeta Masjarakat" [Duta Masyarakat], standing close to the government party Nahdatoel Oelama [Nahdlatul Ulama], deplores the president's latest marriage, since it "harms the standing and prestige of Boeng Karno and of the state". The paper hopes that the president's present advisers and the "palace clique" will be replaced by "men of character who dare to express their opinion and do not say yes and amen to everything". The paper "Oetoesan Nasional" argues along the same line, ascribing Soekarno's new marriage mainly to the interference of the head of the household service of the palace, the former general Soenardjo, "who stems from a feudal milieu and is always out to make the life of his superior pleasant in every possible way."
"To weep". The paper "Soeara Rakjat" [Suara Rakyat] (progressive-socialist opposition), published at Soerabaja, writes that "Boeng Karno" occupies a place of his own in the heart of the majority of the Indonesian people and that therefore the simple man can hardly believe that he, and in his present position at that, entered into this marriage. One will keep asking: why, why and again why. The answer will probably not come, and those who still want to see Engineer Doctor Soekarno as Boeng Karno can only weep about this, according to the paper.
Soekarno in crisis. The paper "Pikiran Rakjat" [Pikiran Rakyat], published at Bandoeng, emphasises that in Indonesia, where society still has a feudal character and every act of the president can have a bad influence on Indonesian society, this marriage can cause unpleasant consequences in society. The paper further remarks that Boeng Karno is evidently going through a crisis and asks how such a leader can lead a people which is also struggling with various crises. "To overcome his present crisis there is only one way: he must distance himself from the present palace clique."
