(From one of our editors) In the trial against Oentoeng [Untung] and Njono that begins today in Djakarta, Mrs Trees Soenito-Heyligers (50 years) will act as counsel for the accused. Mrs Soenito, Dutch by birth, took on the defence after various lawyers in Djakarta had refused. Oentoeng, at the time commander of a battalion of President Soekarno's bodyguard, is said to have been the instigator of the failed coup on 30 September of last year. Njono, who was leader of the communist trade union Sobsi, is said to have supported Oentoeng's action. It will be the first time that Mrs Soenito-Heyligers, who has Indonesian nationality, acts as a lawyer. She studied law at Leiden and until recently worked at a bank in Djakarta. Both Mrs Soenito and her husband are members of Indonesia's communist party (PKI). Mr Soenito also studied law at Leiden. During the war he took an active part in the resistance against the Germans (he played a role in the coming into being of the illegal Trouw) and in 1952 became chairman of the association of Indonesian students in the Netherlands. Later he was arrested in the Netherlands on suspicion of subversive communist activities, after which he broke off his studies and left with his wife for Indonesia. The Soenito family is highly regarded in Djakarta, also among non-communists. They belong to the non-extreme communists within the PKI.
