=== [Page 1] === DJAKARTA (ANP) - In a six-minute [sic] plea, Njono's defence counsel, Mrs Trees Soenito-Heyligers, established in the Netherlands, said that nothing has emerged from the interrogations at the trial of Njono to support the accusation that the accused had forged a plot against the Indonesian government to overthrow it by force. She therefore concluded that he cannot be declared guilty. Earlier the public prosecutor at the special military court had demanded the death penalty against this Indonesian trade union leader. Njono himself was also allowed to speak in his own defence. While Mrs Soenito had confined herself mainly to the legal aspects of the case, he gave for an hour a political exposition. The military tribunal will pass sentence. If Njono is sentenced to death, as the demand stated, his defence counsel will have one week's time to appeal to President Soekarno for clemency. If the sentence is otherwise, no appeal is possible. Mrs Soenito was appointed as lawyer two days before the beginning of the trial. She complained in the courtroom on Saturday that the time for preparation had been much too short. She [denied] emphatically being a member of the C.P.N. [Dutch Communist Party]. One of the leaders of the failed coup in Indonesia, Colonel [Latief], has been arrested according to the Muslim daily "Djihad". The paper cites as its source Major Ali Rachman, commander of a battalion of the Siliwangi division.
