BANKGEBOUWEN IN DJAKARTA DOORZOCHT. Zakenwijk „afgegrendeld”.

Masjoemi leader warns against playing with fire. Isa Anshary, one of the leading figures of the Masjoemi [Masyumi], has issued the warning not to try to keep his party out of the new government. Such an attempt would, according to him, be tantamount to "playing with fire". He said he was convinced that the other Islamic parties too will not want to accept an exclusion of the Masjoemi, in view of the great dangers attached to it. "A cabinet without the Masjoemi, which in the general elections achieved an absolute majority in most of the outer regions, could in fact govern only Java," said Anshary.
If nevertheless this course were to be followed, then perhaps the Masjoemi, which has so far adopted a flexible and benevolent attitude, could change tactics. The Masjoemi refuses to be suppressed. Finally he said he was convinced that President Soekarno himself must step in and form a government composed of "first-class leaders" of country and party.
Mrs Soekarno I: "I am prepared to form a cabinet..." Mrs Fatmawati Soekarno, first wife of the Indonesian president, has written a letter to him and to the former vice-president, Drs Mohammed Hatta, in which she asks why a woman could not be charged with the formation of a new Indonesian cabinet. "As mother of the Indonesian people and first lady of the country, who has lived in the presidential palace, I am prepared to sacrifice myself for the welfare of people and state," said Mrs Fatmawati Soekarno. Mrs Fatmawati Soekarno, first wife of the president, has not been divorced from him. She did, however, leave the palace when the president, two years ago now, took a second wife (as a Muslim he may have four official wives). The fact that Soekarno took a second wife was at the time taken very much amiss by the organisations of Indonesian women.
BANK BUILDINGS IN DJAKARTA SEARCHED. Business district "sealed off". Troops of the local military command of Djakarta yesterday searched all bank buildings in the business district of Djakarta, both those of the Indonesian national banks and of the foreign banking companies. These raids were connected with the tracing of possible documents relating to "foreign subversive activity" and the violation of foreign exchange regulations. They also aimed, according to what the military command announced, at the tracing of illegal weapons possibly hidden in the bank buildings. Yesterday early morning, before the investigations began, the lower town of Djakarta, where most banks are located, was "sealed off". Clients were allowed to enter the banks but not to leave them again until the investigation was over. According to the press officer of the local military command the books and other documents were checked by officers, but he was not willing to provide information on the results of the raids. The book investigation is, according to him, not yet finished. In connection with these military investigations the stock exchange in Djakarta was also closed yesterday, so that no securities quotations became available.
COMMUNISTS AGAIN THREATEN WITH GENERAL STRIKE. The secretary-general of the Indonesian communist party, D. N. Aidit, declared yesterday that the workers throughout the country are prepared to proceed to a general strike at any moment if formateur Soewirjo should put together a new cabinet that would not be in accordance with his assignment to form a business cabinet. The communist leader made this statement after he had had a talk with Soewirjo. He said that the general strike is intended solely to achieve that the communists will be included in the government and that the Masjoemi and communists will become "partners" in the new coalition, in the interest of all concerned. Beforehand Aidit had declared that his party has no objection to the Masjoemi being represented in the new government by two of its members, provided however that they are experts and would agree to the implementation of the presidential conception with regard to a "government of the new style". Finally Aidit said he had handed Soewirjo a list of candidates of his party for ministerial seats in the new cabinet.
