Wilfrid Eggleston
Professor told the Ottawa Women's Press Club yesterday.
Director of journalism
Carleton University Mr. Eggleston spoke on "Changes and Developments in Mass Media"
at the press club dinner held at the Chelsea Club.
Tracing developments in the department of journalism at Carleton since 1947, the speaker said one of the major changes was the increase in women students.
In the first three years of the Carleton course 80 percent were male and 20 percent female. In the past three years 56 percent have been male and 44 percent female. The 1957-5graduating class has nine girls and six boys.
In the light of this development Prof, Eggleston said he was happy to have had more demands from employers for young women journalists than for young men.
Same Training
The growth of radio, television and film news coverage is another major change in journalism, said the speaker.
He felt that journalists using these media needed the same training as a newspaper reporter, "Electronics will never hurt newspapers," he said. "They will increase interest so that still more papers will be sold."
There was no doubt, he said, newspapers could report some things better than any of their competitors. He cited the budget story as an example. Radio and TV however could give the audience a feeling of immediacy and participation.
As a former president of the Parliamentary Press Gallery, Prof. Eggleston said he was pleased the rules were at last relaxed to admit the first full time radio newscaster in history.
With the growth of public relations the director has found there are as many journalism graduates going into this field as on newspapers. A recent estimate showed there would soon be 200,000 in PR work In the United States. When he first came to the Press Gallery there were three public relations people in Ottawa he said.
He felt journalism was not getting Its share of top people coming out of high schools partly due to more scholarships and grants for the sciences, engineering and related fields.
"Yet it is vital," said the speaker, "We have better educated people bringing us the picture of what is going on in the world."
Prof. Eggleston thanked the club for the establishment of a bursary loan fund. He was introduced by the president Frances Baldwin and thanked by Lilian Wadsworth.
