=== [PDF page 1] === VASHTIS VOICE 350 A WOMEN’S LIBERATION NEWSPAPER. MARCH 1974 « RNATIONAL \s omens a ISSUE NO6 === [PDF page 2] === RAPE CRISIS A/F LLNS N All over Meibourne, as all over the world, women are afraid to stay in their homes alone, afraid to drive out at night slone, &frsid tc take a shower with no-one in the house, afraid to walk around by themselves. The non-working wife is supposedly the most protected member in our society, and can feel the most wwinerable. The 'liberated' woman is libesated inte facing threats and innuendos directly. No woman is free from sexual terror. If we are not threatened directly, the news papers undermine our confidence by glostingly featuring attacks on women, where the most sympathy goes to the victim who was a virgin or married and killed, and the least or non2 at all to the woman who was hitching or otherwise stepping over the boundary of being a ‘good woman’. Occasional accounts of women who resisted attack are about a paragraph long. We're not encouraged to stand up to rapists. Police advice is to play up your femininity and scream. If your voice dries up, you've got nothing but your femininity. We have to understand what kind of power the rapist has, and then over= throw him. We have to stop rape before liberation is more than an expty word. So, what ts rape? In short, rape is sexual intercourse without consent, which is easy enough to understand, but still involves shades of ethics that are difficult for the law to take into account. Se, in claiming a rape, it isn't enough simply to sey: "I didn't consent." Bruolses, screams, pref— erably - though unlikely — 4 witness...all these things are necessary for a prosecut— ion with any chance of success. As you can tell from the low number of rape cases in Victoria, rape laws aren't centred around the protection of women. Oddly enough, they are greatly concerned with the pretection of men = from false assault. One of the great preconceptions about rape is that 25% charges come about through women who As with men, get scared and cry rape. Women do indeed try to frame men from motives of fear, revenge, need for an abortion, but only at most in 20% of cecorded cases, and it's usually discovered pretty early. As for the rest of it, rape laws are working for the men who make them - they are basically concerned with patrimony and legitimacy, and the woman is complaining, not for retaliation, but td show that she didn't go along with this attack on property. Men dre concerned with vengence on the rapists of their wives and daughters: they are not concerned equally with oll women. The man who wants to kill "his" woman's rapist and tne man who will join in a gang bang might easily be one and the same. MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT RAPE (oS a ae Misconceptions and side issues about rape are what moke public attitudes so hard for a woman to fight. The greatest misconception £8 one which suggests, in different forms, women can't be raped, women ask to be raped, women enjoy rape. Women gener=, ally believe the first, hoping that it is true, while men tend to believe the other two. There was on American district atterney who began a rape trial by spinning a coke bottle on a table and trying to insert a biro at the same time, as a demonatration of how physically impossible rape is. This-is a pretty irrelevant comparison = only a man's perspective could separate 4 woman's vagina from the rest of her body like that. Women can be raped, and it's only necessary to think back to the definition of rape = sexual “intercourse without Consent = to see that it isn't something “anyone could ask for. But as soon as sex comes in the whole issue is confused. If two. men went to the pub for a drink and one man started pouring drink down the other's throat, no-one would doubt that it was a clear case of assault. But even when & man is forcing sex on a woman, the old preconceptions of a woman as passive, receptive, eternally responsive to men, have to intrude. Women are sex objects to a point where men can't believe they didn't invite rape or enjoy rape - even eee theugh the responses of your sexual nerves are something that just can't be forced. One woman said: "Even the quy who raped me asked me why I didn't enjoy it." Stili more degrading is the iden that if a woman responds physically while she is being raped, the assault somehow ceases to be an ossault. In every rape case, o man has invaded 4 woman's private space. Why isn't this immediately obvious to everyone? Why does rope seem such a fact of life that only the rape of children couses large scale indignation: Why the myths that excuse the rapist from responsibility? AN EXTENSION OF MALE DOMINANCE The way sex roles ore set up we are supp— osed to believe in the natural sexual aggressiveness of men, their natural physical superiority over women and women’s passivity and receptivity. Rape ia just on extreme version of this. It is an only slightly forbidden fruit. As Germaine Greer writes: A man has to very unlucky to be convicted of the crime of rape. He has to be stupid enough, or drugged or drunk enough to leave a mile-wide trail of blood, bruises, threats, semen, screaming and what have you, and he has to have chosen the kind of woman about whom the neighbours have nothing but qood te say, who has enough chutzpah to get down to the police station at once and file her complaint, and, if it cesults in a trial, to face down public humiliation for hear-say evidence about her morals is admissable. The capist is the policeman of the patrciarchy. Men who would never offer any kind Of violence to « woman get the benefits of his activity. Rapists and their cousins, the verbal rapists on street corners and in passing cars, provide a very practical xreason for women to want the protection of amen. The terror of rape ensures the final acceptance by womon of male dominance. Any move towards independence brings women up against fear time and time again. No wonder that rape is supported by « consensus in the male class. Journalists, judges, dectors, lawyers, writers of hard core pornography, writers of the pornaography otherwise known as ert, anti-woman moraliats inside and out of the church and all men who believe women enjoy rape = all these men are vicarious rapists. The Now York capists write: "Rape is seen by men as an act of freedom and strength", and I thought this was an exaggeration until Tf remembered the Sydney judge who complimen= ted a rapist on his athletic ability, and then read in «4 Melbourne University magawine ceview of Alfred Hitchcock’s film “Frenzy”: indeed, the rape-murder of Blaney's frigid wife almost has our blessing...It is hard for me to believe that Rusk (the rapist) is not, for all of us, the man most alive, even if, comet like, he will scon be snuffed out. The assumption there, of course, is that "all of us" are men. A woman watching "Frenzy" would find the rapist as faceless and anonymous as this male reviewer finds the women: for her identification would automatically be with the victim. PETTY RAPE Not all men are rapists. But any man might be. A rapist can't be spotted by the insane glint in his eyes: he is not necessarily what this society describes as "sick’, except that he takes the desire to humiliate and to lord his strength over someone weaker a step further than is socially acceptable. While women remain unable to defend themselves, and while men keep their enormous investment in their own EEE power, then the repist is a natural phenomenon. And while cut and out rapists are the exception, Germaine Greer talks about another kind of rape which she calis petty tape, commonly known as seduction, oa sexual rip-off happily practised by o large percentage of men who would never consider themselves as rapists and could never be brought te court. Petty rape plays on « woman's oppressed and servile status, on her affection for the man, on the need for a woman to be with a man in her social life. Petty rapists are the men who take advantage of @ woman being drunk, of a woman being hospitable, of a woman being unwilling to cail police or neighbours, of & woman who is intimidated by being called & cocktesser, of a woman who believes what they say to her. We have all had some contact with them. Petty rapist and rapist proper alike destroy women's self esteem. The woman who has been raped by force feels that she has been thrust into an-intimacy she does not want and cannot reject. ‘She feels, as she is expected to feel, shame and guilt. She takes the sins of the rapist on herself. Even if she understands enough of sexual politics to fight the feeling that she is to blame and to see the fape as simply something that happened to her, her sense of fear must be increased. Being at home alone cr going out alone at night may become impossible or traumatic. The rapist, in attacking her body, violates her sense of herself. And the same is true with petty rape. The way the man treats her is the way in which she comes to identify herself, since there are no pes= itive alternatives offered. ACTION AGAINST RAPE We will only begin to discover the positive alternatives for curselves when we estab— lish mutual support among women, enough to enable us to stand up against the patriar-— chal bonding of the boys. We have to agree on an understanding of rape that we can pat against the present anti-woman thecries. We have to know that others are with us as wo try to free cur minds of the stereotypes of guilt and shame and passivity. Then we Can take action. We can help ourselves, peoling cur women's jungle lore of self defence, learning judo or karate, practising with weapons to increase our self confidence. We can work now to stop petty rape, which is beyond the law, but well within the range of women with a new sense of self-respect and independence. We can work to help victims of cape. In America, 24 hour phone services have been established where women can ring for counsellina, for advice about police, doctors and hospiteis, for support during the case and during the trial; and the Rape Crisis Action Group at the Women's Centre in Melbourne is trying to establish something along the same lines. This ts necessary and immediate action, and at the same time it is only «. band-aid on the sore. For what we have: most importantly to do if we are to STOP RAPE, is, on 2%ne level, to change community ettitudes about the naturalness of rape, and, on another level, to try in yet another way,.to undo the conditicning of female and male into their complementary self-and-cach-other destructive ways. As Rebin Morgan says: Just once in this my only lifetime to dance all alone and bare on a high cliff ubder cypress trees with no fear of where to place my feet. To even glimpse what I might have been and never never will become, had I not had to "waste my life" fighting for what my lack of freedom | keeps me from glimpsing. It is to achieve this that we must stop rape. For details of the Rape Crisis action group write to or phone the Women's Centre, 16 Little LaTrobe Street, Melbourne, 347-1564. pagel [Unreadable] === [PDF page 3] === Dear Vanhti, raiaing has ence for m i no i my life. WHAT THEY education and because ads take up 60 much TY Television plays a large part in our time and are so expertly designed, the probably influence us as much if not more than the programs. Although a small minority of people may be immune to ads, obviously the majority are not, or companies would not spend on them the millions of dollars they do. Because of the great influence which TV ads have on us it is interesting, albiet horrifyjing, to see how women are protrayed in them men’s products If you look at TV ads as a whole you will There is Falcon - '' a man's car", Marlboro - "a man's smoke", "MEN smoke Drum" and there is naturally "'a man's beer" notice that men ‘own’ many products At first I thought these ads were defeating their own purpose. By appealing only to men they would miss out on many women who would otherwise be tempted. But I had forgotten that women have been conditioned to think that men are more important than they are, So if an ad is for a "man's" product and women fancy it, many will feel flattered at being allowed into a ''man's world” if only by being allowed to use "man's products”. On the other hand, can you imagine Australian men rushing to buy a "woman's car’, smoking a ‘woman's smoke", etc? The ad men know what they are doing! ei Women who are allowed to participate in these ''male products" ads are almost exclusively there for sex appeal. They quite often say nothing - just ooze "charm" and sex. women’s products With products which are practically exclusively used by women, household cleaners, perfume, make-up, etc., women are allowed to speak, Their remarks are usually innanities about whiter washes, softer hands and so on. One objectionable one shows former Olympic runner Marjorie Jackson advertising Whirlpool. ‘The only running I do these days is around the house’. Judy Pollock, who is 4 wife and mother and still competing in athjetics, could have been used just as effectively to sell Whirlpool. But the men who made the ad had a deeper purpose in mind. What they actually have said in the ad is "Even if women do compete in the outside male world, they cannot sustain it for long and prefer to settle back into the cosy safe home." So the ad keeps women where they belong and justifies to men their role in keeping them there. Even in these 'women's products’ there is {almost always a male commentator. In \other words the advertising boys know we are all conditioned to respect male judgements. SAY ABOUT US. in a bad light As well as being portrayed as of less ii..portance than men and of being interested in unimportant things, women are usually shown in a bad light. shows this quite well The Toyota Corolla ad The man has a new car and shows it off to his many women "friends'' (?). Number one is very dumb, number two is the know-all type. She talks in a superior manner about the and has disc brakes and a compression ratio of nine to one...."', The last female "friend" says in a soft sexy voice "My mother doesn't even know you've got a Toyota Corolla". The message of the ad is clear, Women are either dumb, boring know-alls, or sexy marriage traps. The car ig more important than any woman. It runs smoothly and quietly, it is easy on the nerves, it performs when the man wants it to perform and one can get away from all those terrible women in a Corolla, non-stop features of the car " In almost all ads about cars men do the advertising, although the latest Datsun one has attempted to portray what they think is a ‘Niberated woman’. A well-dressed male is nagging on about "“dise brakes for a man's car", "floor gear shift for a man's car’ and so on. His well-dressed woman companion gets annoyed "fora man's car?!" she asks. She drives off leaving this chauvinist and drives out to the country right into a male fantasy. She meets a burly singleted, roughly spoken farm worker. She moves over to the passenger seat. He takes the wheel and says ‘You should never underestimate a certain type of woman". In other words, no matter how sophisticated, women are basically earthy and want to be carried off by cave-man types. At least the ad ends up with the comment ''A man's car - or a woman's.” ads attack us ‘The ads for Roses Chocolates and the one for Remy Martin whiskey are straight out nasty attacks on women. In the latter a man impersonating W.C, Fields is pouring himself a whiskey, His wife calls out three times that dinner is ready while he makes scathing, nasty remarks, ‘Drove me to drink that woman - only good thing she ever did for me". Loudly - ''Coming my little turtle dove". Softly - "She's more like a turtle than a dove". If no women have complained to Roses Chocolates yet about their ad, then Women's Liberation has a long way to go. A man offers his wife some chocolates and she is so nasty that it's a wonder Roses have sold one box to women or men since. The usual anti-woman jokes about interfering or bitchy mothers-in-law are prevalent. Pure and Simple spray on oil is an example, go too is the one for tea bags. Are there no pleasant mothers-in-law or interfering fathers-in-law in the world or are the ads just reinforcements of male myths? apprenticeships The ad by the Apprenticeship Commission for Apprenticeship Week showed apprentices in various trades - about eight young men doing all sorts of exciting jobs. There were 3 wom- | en involved - all beautiful and blonde. One was shown having a tiara put on her head by a man who apparently made it. Another woman was drinking from a jewelled gobiet one of the men had made, The third woman was walking along in a tight T-shirt and mini skirt. Another picture was superimposed over her of a man grabbing the handlebars of a motor bike he had restored. The film gave the appearance of him grabbing the woman's breasts. And yet the powers that be have the gall to say that women don't seem to be interested in apprenticeships! So what is the general image of women portrayed in TV ads? We are overbearing mothers in-law, or happy happy housewives or dumb girl friends, or know alls, or appendages to men. We rarely say anything knowledgeable, we never say anything knowledgeable in a pleasant manner, we rarely take the initiative and when we do we are nasty, and we are bitch) and overbearing when we get to "the top”’. (e. g. the Drive ad with the hospital matron who says to the nurse "I use it, and look where its got The ad for Vitabrits is a classic and shows where women are supposed to fit. The woman sings "Two men in my life, both need Vitabrits, To one man I'm a mother, to the other I'm a wife", Few ads on TV seem to be concerned with women as intelligent, pleasant, interesting people and they are not interested in the question ''When am I me?” I suggest that when these and other ads appear on TV which are anti-women, women ring the TV stations and write to the manufacturers to complain. Only if women protest will they be changed. Meanwhile, the ads are educating people to accept women as the ad men want them to be. Also please write to Vashti's so that we can publish the information and ask women to boycott the products. 9999 ALVA. === [PDF page 23] === women’s voices Dear VASHTI, Tl reckon that Vasiti's Voloe is tremendous if ever you need some po ole six years’ work lying around so Coggratulations on the response to the International Wamer Day March I wear the ferminial badge ut achool (all giria) and the number of girls that've asked what it is really surprised me Could | suggest « bit more propoganda using the badge and algo the inverted pink triangle A lot of the kids at my fifth form level ve Women's Movements are DEAD and was a phase thal passec The @ March was extremely patronining at about four poragraphe long and deli that publication on one phute Perhaps posters could be billed, etc I don't suppose what I 've told you is very original tut I'd reckon thal out ¢* nearly 900 girls only 40 would have any clear iden of what the Moverment's abcet and only 30 would regard themselves a« femininta and that 30 would include staff too A greater awareness myst be achieved! Report in The Herald, 21/8/1974. A judge in Cincinatti Ohio apparently became quite bored with the evidence being given in a rape trial - he fell asleep and after protests by lawyers appearing in the case, a mistrial was declared. Nice to know that the judiciary are so interested in the plight of raped women! "A double standard has operated here for years, where it is all right for boys to be interested in sex, but not for girls Another problem peculiar to Australia stemmed from the fact that the earliest women here were convicts and voluntarily or involuniarily used as prostitutes. The end result is a whole tradition of regarding women as sexual chattels - something to be bought and used in the house. " Dr. Bob Montgomery of La Trobe University's Behaviour Modification Clinic, quoted in the Herald, 5/7/1974. Peter James of 3AW's afternoon talk-back program, was astounded to learn that a recent series of interviews with Australian women reveals that many housewives regard themselves as slaves in the home and their husbands as either kind or cruel masters, depending on their circumstances. As far as I could find out, there's no legislation which forces a woman who wants to be sterilised to get a man's permission, Nancy Dexter, The Age, 9/11/1974. ANTI-FEMINIST QUOTE OF THE MO! D A Ms is as good as a male. One of the most heinous crimes of the 20th Century is to say that all Women's Lib ladies are ugly and lesbian and only libbers because they've been hurt and can't get on with a man, Certainly looking at those brawling aagaressive covens afresh, harpies who attend Women's Lib meetings or represent the movement on television, one would be forgiven for thinking while one sympathises with many of their aims, one can only deplore the stridency and violence and whining with which they try to enforce then, Jilly Cooper, London columnist and author of "women and Super Women", WAGES ARE EQUALISING,... SLOWLY Minimim weekly wage rates for women have risen 39.2% to $82.64 in the year to July, according to official stastics. In the same period, the male minimum wage rose 27.3% to $95.25 a week. SO WHO'S SURPRISED? “Nomen suffer more than any other social group in terms of job discrimination, says Leonie Green, executive officer of the Victorian Committee on Discrimination in Employment & Opportunity, Complaints from women make up just under one third of all those received by the committee, which was established last year by the Federal Government, The Age, 1/10/1974. M DE: AND ABOUT TIME TOO} Women on Britain's feudally ruled Channel Island of Sark are to be allowed to own property and open bank accounts under legislation voted for by its parliament. Sark, under its hereditary feudal ruler Mr. Michael Beaumont has no income tax, death duties or divorce and women among the 750 islanders are still legally their husband's chattels. The new bill means that a wife will no longer have to turn over her property to her husband, The Age, 6/11/1974. The Herald recently carried the following example of inane, patronising rubbish masquerading as journalism: Once upon a time there was-the most beautiful girl in the world, She had violet eyes and lona black hair and a shy little voice that had almost a lisp to it. And the most beautiful girl in the world grew up. And married. And married, And married, And married. And married, Five times the most beautiful girl in the world married. And each time she seemed to grow more lovely and tha world held its breath with awe at each conquest she made, And then something happened to the most beautiful girl in the world, She stopped being beautiful, The item appeared with a photo of Liz Taylor looking rather plump, with cigarette in one hand and glass in the other. No mention of the men who exploited her "beauty" and youth - apparently now that she is over 40 and no longer beautiful by film-star standards, she is not so exploitable! on. ab bee, cb) te 60 tt) (ee as am” ee 68 oe 6 ee, ee PLEASE SEND EXAMPLES.
