Interview with Indonesian delegates Suwati and Sujonegoro [Author: Kong Dongping] [People's Daily 1952-06-06, page 4] Suwati [苏瓦蒂] is one of Indonesia's sponsors of the Asian and Pacific Regional Peace Conference, a leader of the "Indonesian Gerwis" [印尼觉醒妇女会, Gerwis] and a member of the Indonesian parliament. Sujonegoro [苏约尼哥罗] is an Indonesian national capitalist. In the interviews, both of them, out of their own personal experience, forcefully reflected the ardent wish and demand for peace of the Indonesian people, who have suffered deeply from the war policies of imperialism. "From personal experience I have come to understand deeply what war means," Sujonegoro told the reporter. He took part in Indonesia's national independence movement of 1945. Recalling those days of struggle, filled with the blood and tears of the nation, aroused boundless feeling in him. "How enormous a price and sacrifice the Indonesian people paid to win national independence," he said. "But although our country has become independent, it has not brought happiness. The shackles of the Indonesian-Dutch Round Table Conference agreement still keep us from turning over!" Since September 1949 Sujonegoro has been in business and industry; he is now general manager of the Indonesian "Wumei Ayu" [巫美阿尤] Trading Company Ltd. and the representative of enterprises run by five Indonesian national capitalists. He said: "As a national capitalist, I love my motherland. I hope to win the true independence of the nation and economic prosperity." But under the suffocation of foreign monopoly capital, the heart of this young Indonesian national industrialist and businessman is a tangle of worry and distress: his motherland, the Indonesian archipelago, has fertile tropical land and rich products and resources such as rubber, quinine, coconut and oil, and for many years has been a place coveted by imperialist robbers. But the Indonesian people have not benefited from the sweat and blood of their own labour. Three hundred and fifty years of rule by the Dutch colonisers always treated Indonesia as a market for imperialist commodities and a source of cheap raw materials. Foreign monopoly capital, with the most barbaric plunder and the most backward modes of production, kept Indonesia's economy long in a colonial position of complete subordination to imperialism. Sujonegoro said: "According to the Round Table Conference agreement, foreign monopoly capital still holds all of Indonesia's economic lifelines. Indonesia has no national industry of its own, and daily necessities have to be imported entirely from abroad. The raw materials we export cannot buy the machines we need to develop industry, and market prices are entirely at the mercy of foreign capitalists." In such circumstances Indonesia's economic situation worsens day by day, with inflation, rising prices and ever greater poverty for the people. He said: Indonesian workers' monthly wages now only cover ten days of expenses. Foreign capital has wrecked Indonesia's economic life, while the broad peasantry, because the land question has not been solved, cannot settle down to agricultural production. He told the reporter that in West Java, Cheribon [Cirebon], Kediri [谏义里] and other places, devastated fields and lack of grain have already caused severe famine. After the Second World War American monopoly capital took the opportunity to expand wildly into Indonesia, dragging Indonesia's economy further into the abyss. When talking with reporters about Indonesia's present economic situation, Suwati and Sujonegoro both explained the serious harm of the imperialist war policy and so-called "aid" to the Indonesian economy. "America propagandises 'aid' to backward countries, but this aid is not sincere," Suwati said. "What we most need is machines and tractors, but what America dumps in large quantities on Indonesia is perfume, glass stockings and other luxury goods; this is not aid. American loans have conditions attached; it is using loans to control our economic lifelines." They pointed out that since the "embargo" [on strategic exports to China] was implemented in June 1951 it has caused serious bad results; Suwati drew a sharp comparison of rubber prices before and after the "embargo": "Before the embargo, Indonesian-made smoked sheets [i.e. natural rubber sheets] were worth eleven guilders [盾] per kilogram; now they have fallen to 3.5 guilders per kilogram." The rubber industry is Indonesia's economic lifeline. Foreign exchange from rubber exports makes up about 54 percent of Indonesia's total foreign exchange. On Sumatra, in many places 80 to 90 percent of the Indonesian people live on income from rubber production. Whether the rubber trade is good or bad directly affects the livelihood of local people and the prosperity of other industry and commerce. As a result of America's high-handed depression of rubber prices, Sujonegoro estimated that "Indonesia has lost about 50 to 60 percent of its foreign exchange." The fact is very clear: following the American trade policy has been a complete bankruptcy. Therefore the voice of the Indonesian people opposing this unreasonable American trade policy is growing louder. Suwati said: "Indonesian newspapers have continually protested, asking the authorities one after another why they do not establish trade relations with the Soviet Union, China and the people's democracies in order to seek a new way out." Indonesia's national capitalists in particular demand a change in this worsening economic situation, and show greater urgency. Sujonegoro said: "Indonesia's national capitalists all ardently hope to establish trade relations with the Soviet Union and China. This demand has become more evident and more urgent in recent times!" Speaking of the development and characteristics of the current Indonesian peace movement, Suwati said: "The Indonesian people's longing for peace is inseparable from their demand for an improvement in their impoverished life. Therefore the broad Indonesian masses' demand for peace is universal and ardent." After summarising for the reporters the development of the Indonesian peace movement since it began in 1950, she said: "Although the Indonesian peace movement has met obstruction from many quarters, it is still developing widely. The celebration of May Day in 1951 centred on defending peace and unfolded broad activities. This year too, on May Day, the Indonesian people held gatherings to celebrate and protested against America's conduct of germ warfare." The movement of the Indonesian people for peace is rising higher and higher. She said: "More than 500,000 Indonesians have signed the Stockholm Peace Appeal, and by April 1952 signatures supporting the conclusion of a peace pact among the five great powers exceeded 600,000." Suwati and Sujonegoro both hold that the convening of the Asian and Pacific Regional Peace Conference is of great significance. Sujonegoro said: "The Asian and Pacific region produces important strategic raw materials, and these materials are now being used by aggressor countries to wage war. We believe that if the peoples of this region unite as one, the danger of war can be stopped." Suwati said: "Only by winning peace can a happy life for mankind be guaranteed." She therefore warmly congratulated the success of the Asian and Pacific Regional Peace Conference, and hoped: "that through this conference a resolution will be reached to defend the peace of the Asian and Pacific region by concrete means!"
