The people of the whole world mourn the great teacher Stalin [People's Daily 1953-03-17, page 4] According to Xinhua: The peoples of all countries of the world mourn with boundless grief and firm resolve the death of J. V. Stalin, the great leader and teacher of the working people of the whole world. Togliatti writes an article mourning Comrade Stalin "Pravda" published an article by Palmiro Togliatti, General Secretary of the Italian Communist Party, entitled "Stalin's Cause Will Live Forever, Will Triumph Forever." [Summary of the article follows.] Togliatti wrote: Like Marx and Lenin, Stalin left the deepest mark on human history. He was the guide of scientific Marxism. Stalin transformed the world; thanks to his great activities, the present world is fundamentally different from the past. Socialism and communism are no longer dreams; they are embodied in the mighty Soviet Union. Togliatti said: The names of Lenin and Stalin are inseparable from this century. In the past the liberation struggle of the working class and peoples of all countries had never been on such a grand scale, nor so difficult and complex. Stalin led this struggle together with Lenin; after Lenin's death he developed Lenin's cause under new conditions. In the most complicated circumstances he solved the most difficult problems. His victory became a decisive milestone on the road of progress of all mankind. When Soviet territory was perfidiously attacked, Stalin led the peoples of the Soviet Union in the anti-fascist war and achieved the most brilliant military victory in history. Imperialism threatens peoples with war. Disregarding the peoples' wish for peace, it plots to surround the socialist and democratic countries with an iron fence. It sows seeds of hatred among countries and poisons the world with rumours and slander. In these days Stalin's teachings again helped the peoples. Stalin proved that peace can be maintained. Stalin told the peoples of the world: the future of the world rests on them; as long as they take up the work of defending peace, expose and isolate the warmongers, and defend their independence and freedom against any violation. Stalin made a decisive contribution to the formation of the international peace front; this international peace front has now become a mighty force, whose prestige grows ever higher throughout the world. Togliatti pointed out that the present is a critical period in human history. In future there may be new wars, or there may be long-term peaceful cooperation. We are striving for peace and cooperation. Stalin led us in the struggle for this goal; he will continue to lead us forward. Those who say in the corrupt imperialist press that after Stalin's death his teachings and doctrines "may" be abandoned are foolish and pitiable provocateurs. The peoples and parties nurtured and guided by Stalin firmly believe in their own strength. They will certainly advance along the road of progress and peace that Stalin pointed out. Stalin has left us, but his resolute genius is immortal. Stalin's cause will live forever, will triumph forever. Stalin's cause will triumph throughout the world. The Indonesian people mourn Stalin with deep grief The Indonesian people mourn with deep grief Comrade Stalin, leader and teacher of the working people of the whole world. Besides sending a telegram of condolence, the Indonesian Communist Party issued a proclamation calling on all party members to follow Comrade Stalin's teachings, to preserve the excellent qualities of party members, to preserve unity within the party like the apple of their eye, to strengthen the worker-peasant alliance as the foundation of the united front, to respectfully and loyally strive for the people's democratic rights and national independence, to uphold the principle of proletarian internationalism, and to strengthen the unity of the working people of the whole world. The Indonesian Communist Party also held a memorial meeting for Comrade Stalin; the party's deputy secretary Sutisman [苏蒂斯曼, Sudisman], in delivering the eulogy, called on all party members to strive to raise their level of Marxist-Leninist theory and to do their work better. The Indonesian Gerwis [印尼觉醒妇女协会, Gerwis] sent a telegram to the Anti-Fascist Committee of Soviet Women expressing deep grief at Stalin's death. Many progressive Indonesian newspapers, while reporting the news of Stalin's death, published editorials mourning Stalin and printed Stalin's portrait with a black border on the front page. The Jakarta "Harian Rakjat" [People's Daily] said in an editorial: under Stalin's leadership the Soviet people finally defeated the barbaric Nazi army in the anti-fascist war and rescued the world's peoples from the fascist menace; anyone who is concerned with the history after the Second World War must acknowledge Stalin's great merits in the cause of saving world peace. Stalin's death will make the will of the world's peoples to defend lasting world peace still more vigorous, which will make the warmongers afraid. Indonesian news agencies and many newspapers belonging to different parties praised Stalin's great achievements. The Antara news agency published an article about Stalin's life, which wrote: Stalin during his lifetime devoted everything to the cause of liberation and happiness of oppressed peoples; Stalin was a fighter for world peace, who taught all mankind to hate war and love peace. The Medan "Waspada" [警惕报] said: Stalin, beloved by his friends and respected by his enemies, was indeed a leader of genius. "Pengamat" [观察报] said: it must be acknowledged that in thirty years Stalin not only made the Soviet Union a powerful country but also made his thought influence all countries of the world; the facts have proved Stalin's noble qualities and great personality. Brazilian Communist Party issues a message to the Brazilian working class and people The Brazilian "Voz Operária" ["People's paper"] published a message of the National Committee of the Brazilian Communist Party to the Brazilian working class and people on the death of J. V. Stalin. The message said: Stalin was the greatest defender of peace and human happiness. No one was ever loved by the people as he was. Hundreds of millions of people all over the world listened to his voice and followed his wise instructions. The mere mention of his name increased confidence in victory. The workers of our country and all upright people feel boundless grief at the death of the great Stalin. The National Committee of the Brazilian Communist Party called on the people to raise high the banner of peace, freedom and national independence and to strengthen the struggle against the warmongers. The National Committee reaffirmed its unwavering determination to remain loyal to the Soviet Union. The National Committee now swears again: the Brazilian people will never go to war against socialist countries. In the struggle for a better future the people will win. The banner of the great Stalin is held in the hands of the invincible Communist Party of the Soviet Union and its Central Committee. The French people mourn Comrade Stalin Several thousand Parisians took part on the evening of the 13th in a meeting of the France-USSR Association to commemorate J. V. Stalin. The presidium of the memorial meeting was composed of Marcel Cachin, General Petit, vice-chairman of the France-USSR Association, Fernand Grenier, Françoise Leclerc, vice-president of the Union of French Women, and representatives of other French progressive organisations and social leaders. General Petit delivered the eulogy, stressing that the French people feel boundless grief at Stalin's death. He said: Stalin has died, but his cause lives forever. Stalin said that if the peoples of all countries take up the cause of defending peace and carry it through to the end, peace can be maintained and consolidated. These words will remain forever in the hearts of the world's peoples. According to "L'Humanité", when Vyshinsky, head of the Soviet delegation to the UN General Assembly, arrived by ship from New York at Le Havre, France, the working people of Le Havre sent a delegation to present him with flowers and offer condolences on Stalin's death. On the ribbon of the bouquet was written: The people of Le Havre will always remember Stalin. "L'Humanité" on the 13th published an article by Pierre Courtade praising Soviet peace policy. Courtade said: thanks to Stalin and the Soviet people we have not become slaves of Hitler's empire today. The admiration of hundreds of millions of people for a system without exploitation of man by man, and their gratitude to Stalin and the Soviet Union, cannot be changed by any police, any threat, any terror. The moving events of recent days prove the rock-like firmness of Soviet power and the strength of the unity of the world's oppressed working people and all who support peace and friendship with the Soviet Union. The British people remember Stalin The London "Daily Worker" of 11 March said that it had received many letters from readers expressing "the simple and moving tribute of ordinary people on Stalin's death". The "Daily Worker" published some of these letters. Bright of Maidstone, Kent, wrote in his letter: "In commemorating Stalin, we must make greater efforts to convince the British people that it is of supreme importance to force Churchill and Eisenhower to hold talks with representatives of the Soviet people to discuss the question of world peace. Let us make the immortal achievement of creating a century of peace our best memorial to Stalin, who devoted his whole life to the working class." A reader in North London wrote: "In human history, who in his lifetime has proved so unquestionably as Stalin that workers can build a socialist state? As we commemorate him, let us strengthen our resolve and redouble our efforts to bring socialism and peace to all mankind." A reader in south-east London wrote: "Perhaps in this island there are still hundreds of thousands of people like me who have not forgotten the man who so heroically stood against a powerful enemy and defended Stalingrad; had the enemy he resisted then turned back and used such great force against us, we might well have been crushed."
