On the opening of the meeting of the Council of the Women's International Democratic Federation [People's Daily 1956-04-25, page 4] In this season when treetops put out green and a hundred flowers bloom, Chinese women welcome the convening of the meeting of the Council of the Women's International Democratic Federation as they welcome bright spring sunshine. The great hall of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference in Beijing has been decorated. On the yellow drapes of the rostrum hangs the emblem of the WIDF; a white dove holding an olive branch symbolises peace. On both sides are striking slogans in six languages – English, French, Russian, Spanish, German and Chinese: "Women, strengthen unity and action in the struggle for peace, rights and the happiness of children!" Dozens of national flags flutter gently, and the platform is full of flowers. At 3 p.m. on 24 April the delegates entered the hall. In this crowd we saw many old fighters who have persisted in long struggle for women's liberation; we also saw delegates attending a WIDF meeting for the first time, drawn here by the struggle for peace and the friendship of the women of all countries... The delegates of the various countries have different skin colours, wear different clothes and speak different languages. But when they affectionately embrace one another, their eyes show the same warmth. Delegates meeting for the first time greet each other like friends reunited after a long separation. Here Deng Yingchao warmly held the hands of the Egyptian, Israeli and Indonesian delegates and urged them to stay a few more days in China, because these people were guests in China for the first time. She also said humorously to Mrs. Felton of Britain: "You have come to China three times already, so you count as half a host." The repeated embraces and kisses of the two presidents, Mrs. Gordon and Cai Chang, and their warmth, infected all the delegates. Over there, delegates from the Gold Coast and Britain talked intimately about their impressions. Indian delegates came a long way to greet their Korean and Indonesian friends. The Iraqi delegate left her name and address in the Korean delegate's notebook... The bonds of unity and friendship cross national boundaries and tie these women from all corners of the earth tightly together. To melodious music, forty-six women representatives of the various nationalities of Beijing, in beautiful costumes, walked onto the rostrum. They offered bunches of fragrant flowers, and also offered sincere welcome and friendship. The delegates listened intently to the opening address of WIDF President Mrs. Gordon and the report of General Secretary Angiola Minella. Mrs. Gordon said that women "belong to one big family, whose members are linked and united because they pursue the same cause – protecting their children, striving for their rights and defending peace... For ten years the main aim of the WIDF has been the defence of peace. Because without peace, family happiness cannot be guaranteed and women's living conditions cannot be improved." Indeed, war has brought women countless sufferings. But just as women and peoples of all countries hope never to experience such disaster again, the United States has decided to carry out a series of nuclear tests on Pacific islands from 8 May. Mothers, as creators of life, cannot permit the war clouds that spread death to hang once more over their dear children! They know that only in a peaceful environment can they win a happy future for women and children. More and more women have turned their wishes into action; they have given everything, even their own lives. The young French woman Raymonde Dien heroically used her body to stop a train carrying arms to Vietnam; the Brazilian woman worker Elisa Branco, during a military review, called on the soldiers to refuse to go to Korea; an ordinary Indian woman, Dalgit [Dargit] P. Singh, collected sixty thousand peace signatures... The Arab women of Jordan showed great courage in opposing the pressure of imperialist forces to make Jordan join a military bloc... All these actions and struggles are for one noble word: peace! Understanding produces trust and friendship, and is also the basis of unity and cooperation. To expand its ranks and influence, the WIDF invited many delegates from Asian and African countries to take part in this Council meeting. Broad contact between delegates of the various countries, especially contact between delegates of Asian and African countries and delegates from other parts of the world, will produce important results. After the "Bandung Conference", "Asia-Africa" has become an indivisible and important region. In awakened Asia and Africa, the women's movement is also developing very rapidly. Formerly there was no organised women's movement in Africa. Today women of ten countries including Egypt, Tunisia, Nigeria and the Gold Coast have sent delegates to this meeting. Two years ago, the number of women taking part in the women's movement in Indonesia was only six thousand. Today the Indonesian delegates sitting in this hall represent five hundred thousand organised women and tens of thousands more who are preparing to go into action. In Japan, the women's struggle has developed into a very broad mass movement. They play an enormous role in the struggle against atomic war. Today their delegates have brought a very important written report, which they present to the congress. From the rostrum of the congress we can see the continuous growth of the WIDF's strength. Maria Maddalena Rossi of Italy and Branca Fialho of Brazil are both taking part in the leadership work of the WIDF for the first time. The enlargement of the new leadership on the rostrum also reflects the growth of the WIDF's influence. More and more women are united around it. When this international organisation was founded it united eighty million women of forty countries; now the number of countries it includes has doubled and its membership has increased by one and a half times. The existence of such a force of democratic women is a first in history. And the existence and activity of such a huge international force cannot fail to exert a significant effect on the development of the international situation and the course of world history. * Related reports:
