Peace and happiness are the urgent wish of women of all countries; women delegates of various countries speak at the WIDF Council meeting
[People's Daily 1956-04-26, page 1]
Xinhua, 25th – The Beijing meeting of the Council of the Women's International Democratic Federation continued at 9:30 a.m. on 25 April in the CPPCC auditorium. The session was chaired by Cissa Nabarawi [西萨·纳巴拉奥维] of Egypt, vice-president of the WIDF.
Mrs. Safia [萨菲亚夫人] of Bombay, member of the WIDF Council and member of the executive committee of the National Federation of Indian Women, delivered a report to the meeting entitled "The Wishes of Asian and African Women".
Next, Anni Krell [安妮·克雷尔], member of the WIDF Council, member of the leading bureau of the Democratic Women's League of Germany within the Federal Republic of Germany, and city councillor of Remscheid, spoke. Her speech expressed the urgent wish of West German women and mothers for a peaceful life. She said that women living in a militarised region have increasingly taken part in discussions on peace, prices and wages, and democratic rights. They oppose the rearmament laws and demand arms reduction and a ban on atomic weapons. She also said that more and more West German women are discussing with concern the future of Germany; they recognise the German Democratic Republic as the basis of the future Germany and demand that the government carry out policies conducive to German unification.
Next to speak was Justine Ranaivoseka [儒斯丁·拉内沃斯卡], member of the Malagasy Solidarity Committee, secretary of the teachers' union and vice-president of the democratic youth federation. This friend from a distant island island spoke of the wishes, distress and struggle of Malagasy women. She said Malagasy women live under cruel colonial rule and racial discrimination and cannot enjoy a normal human life. She said that to improve their circumstances many Malagasy women have joined the democratic movement.
Margarita Ponce [玛格丽塔·德庞赛], WIDF Council member and president of the Argentine Union of Women, spoke next. She brought the congratulations of the Argentine Women's Union. She said: Argentine women understand the link between defending women's rights and defending peace. At present one of the matters of greatest concern to the Argentine Women's Union is to draw peasant women into the peace movement.
The last speaker at the morning session was Maria Maddalena Rossi, vice-president of the WIDF and member of the Italian parliament. She described to everyone the work and life of Italian women. She said: we women all understand the significance of the peace movement; women's movement to defend peace must be linked with all kinds of activities. The international women's movement must be strengthened more widely so that women of different women's organisations are linked more closely. The morning session ended at 1 p.m.
Xinhua, 25th – The WIDF Council meeting continued with speeches from the floor at 3:30 p.m. on the 25th. The session was chaired in turn by Mrs. Maria Maddalena Rossi, WIDF vice-president and president of the Union of Italian Women, and Branca Fialho, WIDF vice-president and president of the Brazilian Women's Federation. Liza Petrova [丽佳·彼得罗娃], WIDF Council member and general secretary of the Anti-Fascist Committee of Soviet Women, spoke.
Suharti [苏哈尔蒂], WIDF Council member and vice-chairman of the Indonesian Women's Movement Association [Gerwani, 印度尼西亚妇女运动协会], spoke next. She said: the ranks of the Indonesian women's movement organisations are expanding daily in the struggle to defend peace, national independence, democratic freedom and women's rights. She said: Indonesian women are particularly opposed to the American policy of drawing their country into the Manila military treaty. She also said that the Indonesian Women's Congress held in Palembang, composed of twenty-three women's organisations, warmly welcomed the proposal of the All India Women's Conference of India to convene an Afro-Asian women's conference.
Mrs. Ma. Bamba [马·巴姆巴], president of the Women's Committee of the Ivory Coast, pointed out in her speech that women of West Africa under foreign rule are organising themselves to win their due social position. She also said: the most precious things in the world are peace and unity.
Mrs. Mila [米拉夫人], secretary of the Tunisian Women's Union, said that Tunisian women took part in the struggle against colonial rule and helped win Tunisia's independence. She said that the Tunisian people demand that the government take action so that Tunisia no longer serves as a base for French land and air forces to suppress the Algerian people.
Dora Russell [多拉·罗素], secretary of the Standing Committee of Mothers and member of the National Committee of the National Council of Women of Great Britain, spoke. Starting from the standpoint of women and mothers, she spoke about peace and war. She said: We believe that governments have a duty to consult for peace and not to make war. If we are good mothers we will find ways to keep the family harmonious, and therefore we also hope the great family of mankind will be harmonious. We must make mother love shine over the whole world.
During the session twenty boys and girls from a Beihai kindergarten poured into the hall carrying flowers and presented them to the presidium. Mrs. Gordon and the delegates on the rostrum warmly kissed them, hugged them and placed sweets and picture books in their little hands. A happy atmosphere of maternal love enveloped the whole hall. Council members and invited delegates from Switzerland, Israel, Canada, Bulgaria, Chile and the German Democratic Republic also spoke at the meeting. The afternoon session ended here. The congress will continue on the evening of 26 April. *
