Indonesian women's organisation leaders meet Soong Ching-ling [Song Qingling]
[People's Daily 1956-08-18, page 1]
Xinhua News Agency, Jakarta, 17th – Leaders of Indonesian women's organisations held a gathering in Jakarta on the afternoon of 16 August to welcome Vice-Chairman Soong Ching-ling. Soong Ching-ling said at the reception: "We Asian and African women are particularly conscious of the new atmosphere gradually spreading in the international climate. We welcome the restoration of calm reason on the international stage. Thanks to the persistent struggle of millions of men and women, the idea of peaceful coexistence is gradually overcoming the brinkmanship of certain hot-headed people. We women especially hate war and the destruction of life, property and hope that war brings. The thought that some people still consider the use of force from a so-called 'position of strength' the final solution to pending problems fills us with revulsion. This situation sets a task for women all over the world: to unite more and more women so that we can force the governments of all countries to seek peace."
She said: "The era of liberation has brought many decisive victories to our two countries. These victories have in turn become a mighty impetus for realising the progress of the women of our two countries. These victories show that today there exists a new Indonesia and a new China, and that in our two countries a new woman has appeared. Returning to the suffering old days is impossible. We can only move forward toward the prosperity and peace of our two countries and the full rights of our women. This is our demand on all mankind and on the women of the world. On this point I assure you that the six hundred million Chinese people will strive together with you to realise the wishes of our two countries and of all the countries of Asia and Africa, wishes which together create today's era of liberation."
Soong Ching-ling also answered questions raised by the Indonesian women leaders about the situation of Chinese women and children. The reception was chaired by the wife of Foreign Minister Abdulgani, and those attending included Mrs. Hatta, Mrs. Sastroamidjojo, Mrs. Wijoprano [维约普拉诺托], Mrs. Surjadama [苏里亚达马], Mrs. Sukanto [苏坎托], Mrs. Subandrio, Mrs. Santoso [桑托索], chairwoman of the Indonesian Women's Federation [Kowani], and other Indonesian women leaders. After the reception the Indonesian women leaders gave a banquet for Soong Ching-ling.
