With the support of two billion people, Sukarno says Indonesia will surely win; Djuanda announces the National Security Council will lead the struggle to recover West Irian
[People's Daily 1957-12-23, page 6]
Xinhua, Jakarta, 22nd – President Sukarno, when receiving Maria Maddalena Rossi, vice-president of the Women's International Democratic Federation, yesterday said that currently two billion of the world's 2.6 billion people support Indonesia's struggle. Rossi (an Italian) was invited to come here to attend the Third National Congress of the Indonesian Women's Movement Association [Gerwani, 印度尼西亚妇女运动协会]. Rossi told President Sukarno that although Italy took part in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the Italian people fully support the Indonesian people's struggle to recover West Irian. She said she believed Indonesia's struggle would win victory. President Sukarno expressed pleasure at Rossi's words. The President said that the struggle of the Indonesian people would certainly be victorious. He also said he would always stand with the Indonesian people and the peace-loving peoples of the world and struggle to defend world peace and win social prosperity.
Xinhua, Jakarta, 22nd – Indonesian Prime Minister Djuanda announced to reporters on the 21st that Indonesia's struggle to recover West Irian will henceforth be led by the Indonesian National Security Council. Prime Minister Djuanda also announced that the West Irian Liberation Action Committee, which had led the struggle during the preceding period, has been dissolved. The members of the National Security Council led by Djuanda include three deputy prime ministers and several cabinet ministers, the chiefs of staff of the three services, the Attorney General, the Police Chief and the Minister of Information. Information Minister Sudibjo is the chairman of the dissolved West Irian Liberation Action Committee. Prime Minister Djuanda made a radio address on the evening of the 21st asking the Indonesian people to bear the temporary difficulties caused by developing the struggle against Dutch colonialism. Prime Minister Djuanda pointed out that the present struggle is to hasten the recovery of West Irian, improve the national economy and Indonesia's international position, and conduct an independent foreign policy more freely. Djuanda pointed out that certain difficulties have already arisen because of the struggle to liberate West Irian. Because of the suspension of the ships of the Royal Netherlands Steamship Company, difficulties in shipping are relatively serious, and the government is seeking ways to overcome them. Djuanda stressed that the former form of relations between Indonesia and the Netherlands cannot continue. Continuing Indonesia's economic and trade relations with the Netherlands would bring greater harm to Indonesia. Prime Minister Djuanda said that in the past the Netherlands extracted a billion guilders in profit from Indonesia each year, and fifty thousand Dutch residents lived luxurious lives in Indonesia.
