President Sukarno has brought new strength to the Indonesian people [People's Daily 1958-02-17, page 5] Commentator of this newspaper President Sukarno of the Republic of Indonesia, from 6 January, successively visited nine countries: India, Egypt, Yugoslavia, Syria, Pakistan, Ceylon, Burma, Thailand and Japan. During the visits President Sukarno held talks with the leaders of the governments of these countries and widely exchanged views on the situation in Indonesia and on issues of general concern to world opinion. President Sukarno's trip abroad has great political significance. President Sukarno expressed to the peoples of various countries the determination of the Indonesian people to oppose colonialism and defend national sovereignty and national independence. During the visits President Sukarno said: "Two blocs can coexist peacefully..., but peaceful coexistence between colonialism and colonial peoples is impossible." The peoples of Asia and Africa readily understand this principle from their own experience, and understand that the Indonesian people's struggle against Dutch colonialism is an important part of the whole anti-colonial struggle of the peoples of Asia and Africa. Therefore the peoples of Asia and Africa wholeheartedly sympathise with and support the Indonesian people's just struggle. During President Sukarno's visits, the opinion of Asian and African countries firmly expressed this sympathy and support. On 15 January the Egyptian "Al-Shaab" ["The People"] wrote: "When necessary, Egypt will support Indonesia as Indonesia supported Egypt's struggle to recover the Suez Canal. Egyptian volunteers will fight shoulder to shoulder with their Indonesian brothers." Since the Indonesian government and people took resolute measures to strengthen the struggle to recover West Irian, the imperialist countries have unleashed a plot of slander and hostility against Indonesia, attempting to lower Indonesia's international position and isolate Indonesia politically. But the imperialist plot has failed. Through President Sukarno's visits to various countries, the governments and peoples of many countries have gained greater understanding of Indonesia's persistence in the struggle to recover West Irian and have given broad support. The influence of the Indonesian people's anti-colonial struggle has also grown. While President Sukarno was abroad, a small handful of rebels instigated by imperialism stepped up activity in the Central Sumatra region, even announcing the establishment of an "other government"; they vainly hoped to wreck from within the Indonesian people's just struggle to liberate West Irian and to free themselves economically from imperialist control. But the criminal activities of these rebels in collusion with imperialism will surely stir all Indonesia's patriotic and democratic forces to unite more closely and resolutely defend the independence and unity of the motherland. Mass organisations including the All-Indonesia Central Organisation of Trade Unions, the People's Youth, the Indonesian Women's Movement Association [Gerwani, 印度尼西亚妇女运动协会], the Indonesian Peasants' Front and seventeen Sumatran people's organisations in Jakarta issued statements one after another supporting the government's decision to seek the arrest of the traitors. The National Front for the Liberation of West Irian, formed of Indonesian soldiers, workers, peasants, youth and women, was formally established, calling on the people to strengthen national unity, suppress subversive activity, root out the troublemaking groups and defend the unity of the Republic of Indonesia. Aidit, general secretary of the Indonesian Communist Party, even called on the people to help the government overcome present difficulties and bring down the rebels of Central Sumatra. Aidit said that as long as the government consistently adopts a resolute attitude and the people and army strengthen unity, the rebels' plot will not succeed. President Sukarno on this visit also paid special attention to strengthening world peace and to developing relations among countries. In the communiqués of his talks with the government leaders of India, Egypt, Syria and Yugoslavia, President Sukarno expressed support for arranging an international conference to end the Cold War, advocated halting the arms race and banning the testing and use of nuclear weapons, reaffirmed Indonesia's policy of not joining military blocs, advocated that countries must develop relations on the basis of peaceful coexistence, and also stressed loyalty to the principles of the Bandung Conference and the defence of the UN Charter. These undoubtedly have positive significance for promoting the development of world peace. President Sukarno's trip abroad is conducive to raising Indonesia's international position and to continuing to strengthen friendly relations between Indonesia and the peoples of Asia and Africa, and will bring new inspiring strength to the struggle of the Indonesian people. As President Sukarno said before leaving Japan for home: "Our revolution is a huge process, at times rising, at times ebbing. But we are convinced that our revolution will surely succeed." The 84 million Indonesian people will unite still more closely around President Sukarno, overcome all difficulties, raise high the banner against imperialism, and struggle to build a completely independent, prosperous and happy Indonesia.
