Defending the cause of peace and strengthening mutual understanding Afro-Asian Women's Conference holds plenary session Shi Liang leaves the hall rather than hear the report of the UN observer [People's Daily 1958-02-18, page 6] Xinhua, Colombo, 16th – The Afro-Asian Women's Conference held its first plenary session this morning. In their speeches the women delegates of Asian and African countries emphasised the role women play in defending peace and presented women's achievements in national construction. Santoso [桑托索, Maria Ulfah Santoso], head of the Indonesian women's delegation, in her speech called on the conference to help the Indonesian people eliminate the situation now created by the imperialists and to support their struggle to recover West Irian. She demanded that atomic energy not be used for destructive purposes. She also said that the Bandung spirit will help strengthen world peace and cooperation. Tahia Mohamed [塔希阿·穆罕默德], delegate of the United Arab Republic, spoke of the restrictions on women under colonial rule and of the situation of women after the country gained independence. Demel [德梅耳], Ceylonese women's delegate, spoke of how Ceylonese women are striving to deal with the women's problems left behind by colonialism. Mrs. Menon [梅农夫人], head of the Indian women's delegation, described the new rights Indian women have enjoyed since independence. Du Qingla [都庆拉], head of the Burmese women's delegation, also contrasted the situation of women in the period of British rule and after Burmese independence. Mrs. Sraoui [斯拉尤依夫人], Afghan women's delegate, said the most important question at present is to guarantee world peace and strengthen mutual understanding and cooperation among the peoples of the world. She praised the convening of the Bandung Conference for giving Asian and African women the opportunity to discuss women's questions. Shi Liang, head of the Chinese delegation, also spoke at the meeting. After the speeches of the delegations, Zeenat Rashid Ahmed [齐纳特·拉希德·艾哈迈德], the Pakistani delegate, gave a report on education in Asian and African countries. In her report she pointed out the backwardness that still exists in education in Asian and African countries and the progress made since political freedom was gained. In her report she appealed for the rights of Asian and African women and children and for equal rights to education. The Japanese delegate then gave a supplementary report on education. When the observer of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization was invited to give a report on education at the meeting, the Chinese women's delegation left the hall. Shi Liang, head of the Chinese women's delegation, had already pointed out in her speech that, because the United Nations and its specialised agencies deprive China of its legitimate rights in the United Nations, the Chinese delegation cannot listen to the reports made at this meeting by the United Nations and its specialised agencies. At the morning plenary session, congratulatory telegrams sent to the conference by women and organisations of various countries, including those from Soong Ching-ling and the All-China Women's Federation, were also read. This afternoon the conference discussed the question of education. Related reports:
