Indonesian mass organisations and public opinion support the government's statement Call for strengthening unity and stopping American interference Subandrio points out that the US government cannot shirk responsibility for supporting the rebellion [Author: Jiang Yousheng] [People's Daily 1958-05-06, page 6] America's "neutral" policy – Jiang Yousheng Xinhua, Jakarta, 5th – In a statement issued today the Indonesian Peace Committee appealed to peace-loving peoples throughout the world to make efforts to stop foreign interference in and aggression against Indonesia. The statement said that Indonesia's national sovereignty is under great threat, and that foreign powers are using armed action to interfere crudely in Indonesia's internal affairs. The statement hoped that people of goodwill throughout the world would support the Indonesian people. Seventeen mass organisations in Jakarta – of veterans, workers, peasants, youth, women, students and others – held a joint meeting on the 4th. The resolution unanimously adopted at the meeting expressed support for Prime Minister Djuanda's statement condemning the United States and the Chiang Kai-shek clique for helping Indonesian rebels, and decided to hold a campaign against foreign interference, calling on mass organisations throughout the country to organise action committees to develop this campaign. The resolution also appealed to the peoples of other countries, especially Asian and African countries, to jointly condemn foreign interference in Indonesia. Xinhua, Jakarta, 5th – Mass organisations in various parts of Indonesia continue to express support for Prime Minister Djuanda's statement condemning interference in Indonesia by the United States and the Chiang Kai-shek clique. On the 4th the Indonesian Peasants' Front, on behalf of its 3.5 million members, issued a statement protesting to the US government and demanding that the US government immediately stop hostile activities by Americans against Indonesia. The Peasants' Front also demanded that the government take clear action against Chiang Kai-shek clique elements in Indonesia and demanded that the Chiang Kai-shek clique's "representatives" be expelled from the United Nations. On the 4th the Indonesian Women's Movement Association [Gerwani, 印度尼西亚妇女运动协会] telegraphed the UN Secretary-General, lodging a strong protest against American interference in Indonesia. Xinhua, Jakarta, 5th – Jakarta newspapers today published editorials one after another pointing out that American interference in Indonesia already constitutes an act of aggression, and calling on the Indonesian people to resist the aggressors. "Merdeka" ["Independence"] said that at home we should mobilise all forces to resist the aggressors, and internationally we should take action so that the aggressors and their supporters are sanctioned by the whole world and all mankind. "Harian Rakjat" ["People's Daily"] called on the Indonesian people to unite closely to resist the act of aggression. This paper pointed out that the enemies within the country should first be cleared out. Xinhua, Jakarta, 5th – According to a report of the Antara news agency, Indonesian Minister of Information Sudibjo on the 4th said he did not believe the American official assurance that the US government bore no responsibility whatsoever for certain American citizens' taking part in the rebels' armed forces. In explaining the question of foreign interference in Indonesia, Sudibjo pointed out that the bloc of countries headed by the United States feels itself increasingly driven into a corner and wants to bring Indonesia into its sphere of influence. Since the beginning of the Indonesian revolution there have always been elements in this country that pursue a policy of cooperation with this bloc. These elements try to make Indonesia abandon the road of independence and its foreign policy of seeking world peace, and they are now trying to make Indonesia join the bloc headed by the United States.
