Moroccan Prime Minister reiterates that foreign troops and bases must be withdrawn
Indonesian opinion attacks the US for harming national dignity
Manila mayor demands an American diplomat get out
[People's Daily 1959-11-09, page 6]
Xinhua, Rabat, 6th – The Moroccan "Al-Tahrir" ["Liberation"] today carried Moroccan Prime Minister Ibrahim's answers to the paper's reporter. The Prime Minister said, "Postponing the withdrawal of French and Spanish garrisons in Morocco will weaken our friendship with those two countries." He also reiterated that the US government should withdraw its bases in Morocco. Prime Minister Ibrahim said that cooperation between the United States and Morocco is possible only when relations between the two countries are established on the principles of respect for Moroccan sovereignty, non-subordination and peaceful cooperation. Speaking of his impressions of visiting the United States, the Prime Minister said that he had talked with oil entrepreneurs of Texas and other business people. He said, "Unfortunately, Americans know nothing about Morocco."
Compiled report from this newspaper; according to Xinhua: Frederick Kivette, Commander of the US Seventh Fleet, at the invitation of the Indonesian naval authorities, arrived in Jakarta on 2 November aboard the heavy cruiser "St. Paul". On the eve of Kivette's arrival in Jakarta, the "American Women's Association" of Jakarta sent an "invitation" to some Indonesian women university students asking them to attend a "dance party" scheduled for 4 November on a Seventh Fleet warship to "entertain" the American sailors on board. This "invitation" provoked strong condemnation from the Indonesian public. The Central Committee of the Indonesian Women's Movement Association [Gerwani, 印度尼西亚妇女运动协会] issued a statement pointing out that this so-called "invitation" would lead to moral corruption and to matters that sully Indonesian national dignity. The education and culture group of the Indonesian parliament, after discussion, announced that its members unanimously opposed this "invitation" of the Jakarta "American Women's Association". Maladi [马拉迪], Indonesian Deputy Minister of Information, also said that this "invitation" was contrary to Indonesian customs and morals.
US Ambassador to Indonesia Jones was forced on the 2nd to announce the cancellation of the "dance party" planned for the 4th to "entertain" the sailors of the American warship. But Jones angrily insisted that the Indonesian public who opposed "entertaining" American sailors had deliberately made "insinuations" and "slander". This statement interfering in Indonesia's internal affairs further aroused anger and protest in Indonesian opinion. The "Fajar" ["Dawn Daily"] published an editorial and also warned the Commander of the US Seventh Fleet not to "carry out covert activities" in Indonesia. The editorial said that the weapons airdropped to Indonesian rebels were all "made in America", and the pilots who carried out these airdrops were also Americans. The captured American pilot Allen Pope was proof. Some members of the Indonesian parliament demanded the immediate trial of the captured American pilot Allen Pope. Widjojo [韦多约], member of the Defence subcommittee of the Indonesian parliament, made a statement on the 3rd demanding the immediate trial of Pope and that he be sentenced to death.
Xinhua, 6th – Manila report: according to the "Manila Daily" [Manila Times?], on 2 November the mayor of Manila demanded the immediate deportation of an insolent American diplomat. As previously reported, Sheridan Ashley [谢里登·艾希利], diplomatic courier of the American embassy, on the 1st drove a car into a taxi, struck a Filipino pedestrian with an empty liquor bottle, and also tried to drive at another young man; nearby Filipino residents were greatly angered, seized him and beat him up. A motorised police unit passing the scene took the American to the police station. This American, whom police described as "insolent and arrogant", pushed the investigator away with his hand and cursed the questioning police in unprintable language. Manila Mayor Arsenio Lacson strongly protested to the American embassy about the courier's arrogant and hostile attitude. He warned that if such a thing happened again the municipal authorities would deal with it severely. At the same time Lacson instructed the police department: "Any American diplomatic personnel who insult Filipinos and Filipino police, whether or not they enjoy diplomatic immunity, are to be detained without exception." In his letter to the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs, the American embassy and the US State Department, the mayor pointed out that this misbehaving American diplomat abused Filipinos as "mongrels". The colonial-master attitude that Americans in the Philippines adopt towards Filipinos has already aroused widespread anger among Filipinos.
