Many local Indonesian people also attended the memorial meeting. On the 10th, those attending the memorial meeting and going to pay their respects totalled twenty thousand. The memorial site was filled with an atmosphere of mourning. Portraits of the two dead hung in the hall, and before the portraits were placed wreaths sent by all the staff of the Chinese Consulate-General in Jakarta and many overseas Chinese organisations and Indonesian people's organisations. The Cimahi garrison command also sent a representative with a wreath. Around the site hung elegiac couplets expressing mourning for the dead and indignation at the atrocity. Inside and outside the hall and in the nearby streets gathered the overseas Chinese and Indonesian people attending. Besides representatives of Cimahi overseas Chinese organisations, there were representatives of more than 150 overseas Chinese organisations from all over Indonesia, who came from Surabaya, Palembang, Jakarta, Jogjakarta, Bali, Malang, Billiton, Jambi and elsewhere. The Central Council of the Indonesian Women's Movement Association [Gerwani, 印度尼西亚妇女运动协会] and its Jakarta, Bandung, West Java, East Java and Cimahi branches, as well as the Cimahi branch of the All-Indonesia Central Organisation of Trade Unions, also sent representatives to the memorial meeting. The memorial meeting began at 9:30 a.m. More than ten children of the two dead, in mourning dress, wept aloud before the mourning hall. Many compatriots and representatives of Indonesian people's organisations attending the meeting could not hold back tears of sympathy. Lin Dunzhang [林敦璋], chairman of the funeral committee, in his eulogy pointed out that the overseas Chinese of Cimahi, like overseas Chinese in other parts of Indonesia, had long settled in Indonesia, that the great majority of them lived in harmony and friendly intercourse with the Indonesian people, and had played an active role and made contributions in the Indonesian people's struggle against imperialism and colonialism. But since powerful groups in Indonesia launched large-scale anti-Chinese activities, the circumstances of the broad overseas Chinese have become increasingly hard and many overseas Chinese have lost their livelihoods. Lin Dunzhang said that what particularly angered the overseas Chinese was that, after Indonesian Foreign Minister Subandrio in his reply this March to Chinese Foreign Minister Chen Yi stated that the forced removal of overseas Chinese had been stopped, and in recent talks with Ambassador Huang Zhen stated that the forced removal activities in West Java would be stopped, a second large-scale armed forced-removal operation in West Java nevertheless occurred, even bringing out troops and slaughtering overseas Chinese women. In his speech Lin Dunzhang expressed thanks to the government and compatriots of the motherland for their firm stand in upholding the legitimate rights and interests of overseas Chinese and for the concern shown over this incident, and thanks to the broad masses of the Indonesian people for the deep sympathy shown for the persecution suffered by the overseas Chinese. He also expressed firm support for the serious protest and demands made by Ambassador Huang Zhen to the Indonesian government over this incident. Finally Lin Dunxiu [林敦秀], representative of the families of the dead, gave a speech of thanks. After the memorial meeting ended, overseas Chinese from all over continued to pay their respects before the coffins of the dead and to express condolences to the families.
