At the afternoon session on the 16th the preparatory committee of the conference put forward supplementary proposals to the report it had presented the day before on the role of women in the struggle for national independence and the defence of peace. The proposals said: "The struggle of the peoples and women of Asia and Africa against imperialism and for national independence is an extremely important aspect of the defence of world peace. The more widely this struggle develops, the more we can weaken the imperialist forces, make it harder for the imperialists to launch wars of aggression, and strengthen the forces striving for world peace." The proposals went on to say that the first action at present is: "to support the struggle of Algerian women forcefully and comprehensively by every possible means; we demand that foreign powers immediately stop interfering in the Congo, withdraw the arms from the Mobutu gang and immediately release Lumumba, protest against the massacres in South Vietnam and Cameroon and firmly demand the immediate withdrawal of foreign troops from these countries, stop foreign interference in Laos, oppose CENTO, SEATO and all aggressive military pacts and oppose the establishment of military bases and the stationing of troops on Asian and African soil, protest against South Africa's policy of racial discrimination, and oppose the use of Israel as an imperialist base." The proposals concluded by stressing that, to oppose the common enemy, the colonialists and imperialists headed by the most dangerous American imperialism, Asian and African women must further strengthen unity. At the morning session on the 16th, a member of the delegation of the United Arab Republic, on behalf of the preparatory committee, made a report on "the political, economic, cultural, social and family rights of Asian and African women". The report said: "The struggle for political rights is an inseparable part of the women's movement everywhere in the world, and for Asian and African women this struggle is closely tied to the struggle for national independence. Experience tells us that if a country does not have the fullest political independence and freedom, women can by no means obtain political rights alone." On women's economic rights the report said: "Only when Asian and African countries are completely independent economically and have their own developed industry will both men and women have work to do." The report pointed out that in some Asian and African countries the majority of working women are regarded as a source of cheap labour. American and some other countries' monopoly capital controls the economies of these countries, exploits the people's labour, especially women's labour, and extracts huge profits from it. On women's cultural rights the report said that experience tells us national independence is a necessary condition for Asian and African women to exercise their educational and cultural rights, because as long as the colonial yoke remains, the people and women are bound to be kept in illiteracy and ignorance. On women's rights in society and the family the report pointed out that the necessary condition for women's progress is the struggle for national liberation. The report also said that even after political freedom has been won there is still much to do to eliminate deep-rooted traditions. The report cited the Soviet Union and China as examples, saying "women there enjoy equal rights with men politically, culturally, socially and economically, and also in family life." Speakers at the morning session on the 16th were delegates from Basutoland, Ceylon, China and India; speakers at the afternoon session were delegates from Algeria, Kenya, Indonesia, Korea, Vietnam, Morocco, Gambia and other countries. When the heroic Algerian delegate spoke all delegates rose and saluted her with unending applause. She said, "Algerian women are fighting face to face with the French imperialist aggressors; from the very first day of the Algerian revolution they have been fighting." She described the heroic struggle of Algerian women taking part in the Algerian National Liberation Army. She said, "The support of the sisters of Africa and Asia for Algerian women has inspired her confidence and increased her strength." She called on women to unite closely to fight against colonialism and imperialism. The head of the Kenyan women's delegation said that the Kenyan people's "struggle against foreign rule has not ended but has intensified, and the momentum of our mass national movement is growing greater and greater." She described the struggle of Kenyan women against imperialism and against the impoverished life they lead under colonial rule. She said Kenyan women are fighting against the cruel rule of British imperialists to win back human equality and dignity. The head of the Indonesian women's delegation said in her speech, "To ensure world peace we must root out imperialism and colonialism. Therefore we must carry on the struggle together to end colonialism and imperialism of every kind." The Vietnamese women's delegate in her speech condemned American imperialists' interference in South Vietnam and Laos. The Ceylonese delegate said, "The revolution in Asia and Africa has not been completed and is still continuing." Many countries have become independent countries through struggle, but the independence of some countries is not yet complete and genuine independence. The Afro-Asian Women's Conference will hold a meeting of its sub-committees on the 17th. (People's Daily database material)
