Vice-Premier Chen Yi came to visit Indonesia at the invitation of Dr. Subandrio, Indonesian Second Deputy First Minister and Foreign Minister. Accompanying Vice-Premier Chen Yi on the visit are Vice Foreign Minister Geng Biao, Zhong Qingfa, director of the office of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Commission, Li Liyin, deputy director of the office of the Foreign Ministry (who had arrived in Jakarta earlier), and Shen Ping, deputy head of the First Asian Department of the Foreign Ministry. After Vice-Premier Chen Yi stepped off the plane he received a warm welcome from Indonesian Second Deputy First Minister and Foreign Minister Subandrio. Also meeting him at the airport were Suwito [苏维托], Secretary-General of the Indonesian Foreign Ministry, Sukani [苏卡尼], Indonesian ambassador to China, Henk Ngantung [亨克·安统], Deputy Governor of Jakarta, Njono [约多], Second Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian Communist Party, heads of mass organisations including the Indonesia-China Friendship Association and the Indonesian Women's Movement Association [Gerwani, 印度尼西亚妇女运动协会], and political activists. Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Huang Zhen, all the diplomatic personnel and consuls of the Chinese embassy and the consulate-general in Jakarta, the diplomatic envoys of various countries in Jakarta and representatives of Indonesian overseas Chinese also went to the airport to meet Vice-Premier Chen Yi. Vice-Premier Chen Yi made a written statement at the airport. Thousands of Jakarta citizens, regardless of the scorching sun, gathered on the wide ground and streets outside the airport awaiting the arrival of the Chinese guests. They held many welcome banners reading "Long live Indonesian-Chinese friendship", "Long live Sukarno, long live Mao Zedong", "Welcome His Excellency Chen Yi", "Long live world peace". When Vice-Premier Chen Yi, accompanied by Subandrio, left the airport by car, they waved Indonesian and Chinese national flags enthusiastically, beat gongs and drums and cheered Vice-Premier Chen Yi. Along the road from the airport to the presidential palace many Indonesian people stood on both sides of the street waving flags and cheering. Today the main streets in the centre of Jakarta were decorated to welcome Vice-Premier Chen Yi's friendly visit. Around the presidential palace and on some main streets of Jakarta the flags of China and Indonesia were hung, and in the middle of the streets huge banners with striking black characters read "Long live Indonesian-Chinese friendship", "Long live Sukarno", "Long live Mao Zedong", "Welcome the arrival of His Excellency Chen Yi". Along the route of Vice-Premier Chen Yi's car decorated arches were erected, and large posters welcoming Vice-Premier Chen Yi and expressing the friendship between Indonesia and China were pasted up. Vice-Premier Chen Yi, accompanied by Subandrio, went by car directly to the presidential palace behind Merdeka Palace and was immediately received by President Sukarno. During his stay in Indonesia Vice-Premier Chen Yi and all his party will stay at the State Palace in the presidential palace. Xinhua, Jakarta, 28th – President Sukarno this morning received Marshal Chen Yi, Vice-Premier and Foreign Minister of the People's Republic of China, at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta. President Sukarno and Marshal Chen Yi held a cordial and friendly conversation.
