The bridge of friendship between China and Indonesia will be further strengthened; representatives of Indonesian mass organisations present gifts to Vice-Premier Chen Yi; Jakarta newspapers carry prominent news of Vice-Premier Chen Yi's visit activities
[People's Daily 1961-04-01, page 5]
According to Xinhua, Jakarta, 30th – In the three days after Vice-Premier Chen Yi's arrival in Jakarta, many Jakarta newspapers carried news, editorials and pictures about Vice-Premier Chen Yi's visit at great length. "Harian Rakjat" [Peoples' Daily] today carried prominently on its first page news and pictures of President Sukarno's conferring on Vice-Premier Chen Yi the Republic's Second-Class Order and of Vice-Premier Chen Yi's call on Abdulgani, vice-chairman of the Supreme Advisory Council. This paper on the 28th published an editorial entitled "Welcome, Vice-Premier Chen Yi!" saying: "There is no doubt that Vice-Premier Chen Yi's visit will consolidate the bridge of friendship long established between China and Indonesia. This bridge was built through President Sukarno's visit to China and the visits of Premier Zhou Enlai and Vice-Chairman Soong Ching-ling to Indonesia." "Warta Bhakti" ["News"] today devoted three-quarters of its first page to news of the activities of Vice-Premier Chen Yi and the Chinese art troupe and carried nine pictures. "Merdeka" carried news of Marshal Chen Yi's activities on its first page today and yesterday. Its headline yesterday was: Chen Yi: Indonesia and China struggle together against imperialism and colonialism. He brings the friendly wishes of the Chinese people.
Xinhua, Jakarta, 31st – More than a hundred representatives of the Indonesia-China Friendship Association, the All-Indonesia Central Organisation of Trade Unions, Indonesia's largest workers', peasants', youth and women's organisations – the Indonesian Peasants' Front, the People's Youth and the Indonesian Women's Movement Association [Gerwani, 印度尼西亚妇女运动协会] – and other mass organisations went to the State Palace this morning to present gifts to Marshal Chen Yi, Vice-Premier of the State Council and Foreign Minister of the People's Republic of China. Vice-Premier Chen Yi personally received the gifts and had a cordial conversation with these representatives. Sain Nasution [赛因·纳苏蒂安, Zain Nasution?], secretary-general of the Indonesia-China Friendship Association, spoke on behalf of all the mass organisations. He said the Indonesian people heartily welcome Vice-Premier Chen Yi's visit, which will further strengthen the long-standing fraternal relations and friendship between China and Indonesia. He said that although the gifts were few they have great significance for the friendship between China and Indonesia. A young man working in the mass-organisation group of the State Reception Committee told Vice-Premier Chen Yi that the group had received many letters from the Indonesian people warmly welcoming Vice-Premier Chen Yi's friendly visit to Indonesia and hoping to meet him in person. Vice-Premier Chen Yi said cordially to them that China and Indonesia are brother countries and relatives, and have had two thousand years of friendly relations. We hope to continue to work together to strengthen the friendship of our two countries and to learn from each other. After receiving the gifts Vice-Premier Chen Yi warmly shook hands one by one with the representatives and expressed thanks. The gifts presented to Vice-Premier Chen Yi included Indonesian handicrafts, wood carvings, batik cloth, fruit and Indonesian-language translations, published by the Indonesian Innovation Foundation, of the works of Mao Zedong, leader of the Chinese people, and Liu Shaoqi and others.
