Sukarno orders preparations to liberate West Irian; Aidit condemns the US for supporting Dutch colonial rule over West Irian
[People's Daily 1961-12-20, page 3]
Xinhua, Jakarta, 19th – Sukarno, President of Indonesia and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, announced this morning at a mass rally of one million people in Jogjakarta that he had ordered all the armed forces of the navy, army and air force to prepare to liberate West Irian. Sukarno read the "Order to the People": "The President of the Republic of Indonesia and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, in order to carry out the policy of tit-for-tat struggle with the Netherlands to liberate West Irian, has ordered the armed forces to carry out, at a moment soon to be determined, the task of liberating Indonesian territory West Irian from the shackles of Dutch colonialism. Now, since the Netherlands still wants to continue colonialism in Indonesia's territory of West Irian by dividing the Indonesian state and nation, I order the whole Indonesian people, including the people of West Irian, to carry out the following three commands: 'One, crush the Dutch colonialists' attempt to create a puppet Papuan state. Two, raise the red-and-white flag in Indonesia's territory of West Irian. Three, prepare to carry out general mobilisation to defend the independence and unity of the motherland and nation.'" As President Sukarno announced this order, the square and streets of Jogjakarta were a sea of people, packed with people of Jogjakarta and from other places and with armed forces. People all over the country listened to President Sukarno's order on the radio. Attending the mass rally were members of the Defence Council, the chiefs of staff of the army, navy and air force, cabinet ministers, important members of the Provisional People's Consultative Congress, the parliament and the Supreme Advisory Council, and diplomatic envoys of various countries in Indonesia.
According to Xinhua, Jakarta, 18th – The Fourth National Congress of the Indonesian Women's Movement Association [Gerwani, 印度尼西亚妇女运动协会] closed victoriously here on the evening of the 17th after four days of meetings. The resolution on the West Irian question adopted by the congress called on Indonesian women, especially members of the Indonesian Women's Movement Association, to prepare to carry out President Sukarno's order to recover West Irian. The congress adopted a telegram to the United Nations demanding the restoration of the legitimate seat of the People's Republic of China in the United Nations. During the congress Aidit, chairman of the Central Committee of the Indonesian Communist Party, delivered congratulations in the name of the Indonesian Communist Party. Speaking of the present situation, Aidit said the danger of war comes from the imperialist camp headed by the United States. Dutch colonial rule over West Irian is also supported by the United States. Therefore the struggle to liberate West Irian is in accord with the struggle against colonialism, against imperialism and for world peace. Guo Jian, head of the delegation of the All-China Women's Federation of the People's Republic of China, in delivering congratulations at the congress on the 15th expressed firm support for the struggle of the Indonesian people and women to liberate West Irian. The congress elected a new Central Committee with Mrs. Umi Sardjono [乌米·萨佐诺夫人] as chairwoman. The congress also adopted resolutions on implementing land reform and the crop-sharing law, and resolutions demanding that the government promulgate a democratic marriage law and lower commodity prices.
