Indonesian political parties and organisations demand severe punishment of rioters, call on the people to keep their eyes open against counter-revolutionary plots, and expose US "Peace Corps" subversives stepping up infiltration of Indonesia
According to a Xinhua dispatch from Jakarta on the 18th: Indonesian political organisations and mass organisations continue to issue statements severely condemning the riots that have occurred in a number of places and that have disrupted public order and damaged China-Indonesia friendship. According to the Antara news agency, representatives of the Central Committee of the National Front on the 17th submitted to the Indonesian Attorney General materials on the recent riots in Cirebon, Tegal, Bandung and Bogor. The proposal put forward by the representatives said that the government should adopt still harsher measures so that the rioters and their instigators behind the scenes have no place to hide. According to the 'Eastern Star' [Bintang Timur] of the 18th, on the 17th the Central Committee of the Indonesian [Communist] Party issued instructions on the riots to Party branches across the country and to the mass organisations under its leadership, pointing out once again that there is no other road except to eliminate such counter-revolutionary provocations thoroughly. The Indonesian Students' Movement League issued a statement pointing out that these counter-revolutionary riots are clearly in step with the plot of imperialism and neo-colonialism to set up 'Malaysia' and to send US 'Peace Corps' subversives to strengthen their encirclement and infiltration of Indonesia. The Central Committee of the Indonesian Women's Movement Association [Gerwani] issued a statement saying: The incidents in Bandung and other places were despicable reactionary acts, in violation of the Political Manifesto, endangering the efforts of the Indonesian government and people to strengthen national unity in order to resolve the worsening economic difficulties. The Central Committee of the Indonesian Public Works Union issued a statement pointing out that the aim of this racist activity is clearly to turn aside the spearhead of the Indonesian revolution. The Central Committee of the Film and Theatre Workers' Union, the Central Cooperative Body of the Civil Servants' Unions, the Prison Workers' Union and other mass organisations also issued statements or sent telegrams condemning these riots, declaring that they would cooperate closely with the police authorities to foil any plot by the enemies of the revolution. The Central Committee of the Indonesian Catholic Youth issued an appeal on the 16th calling on all Indonesian Catholic youth to draw a clear line between themselves and those who seek to split national unity by racist means, and calling on them to help the government's work teams quell the riots that have recently occurred in some areas. Brigadier-General Sarobini [Surono?], Commander of the Central Java Military Region, in a speech on the 13th called for safeguarding the integrity of the state and strengthening the National Front, and said: 'Do not easily be influenced by illegal incitement whose aim is to destroy the fruits of our victorious struggle.' According to a Xinhua dispatch from Jakarta on the 19th: According to today's 'Eastern Star', after the reactionaries caused material losses by creating riots in Bandung, Cirebon and Tegal, they are still at every moment seeking to carry out such racist activity again in other places, and are even continually attempting to stir up riots in the capital, Jakarta. Materials gathered by this paper's reporters show that on 9 May the racist group in Bandung instructed its accomplice group in Bogor to take action in Bogor. This instruction was carried out on 14 May. They are planning to extend this reactionary activity to Jakarta. Jakarta security authorities have, since the 15th, arrested a number of people, some of whom were caught red-handed while putting up posters inciting racist sentiment. On the 16th the 'Eastern Star' also published an editorial under the title 'Smash the counter-revolution'. The editorial said: President Sukarno has clearly reminded us to heed these recent events. The President said: These recent events should make us keep our eyes open and make us more vigilant, vigilant at all times. The events to which the President referred are clearly not mere barbarous acts, but open plots endangering the revolution, counter-revolutionary plots.
