=== [Page 1] === Central Council of the Indonesian Women's Movement Association [Gerwani] writes to our All-China Women's Federation condemning the reactionaries' creation of counter-revolutionary riots; counter-revolutionaries again stir up riots in Sumatra; 38 shops and homes of overseas Chinese and ethnic Chinese destroyed According to Xinhua on the 4th: The All-China Women's Federation of the People's Republic of China today received a letter from the Central Council of the Indonesian Women's Movement Association [Gerwani]. In the name of 1.5 million members, the Central Council of Gerwani, in the letter, expressed firm condemnation of the counter-revolutionary racist activities that have recently occurred in some parts of Indonesia and that endanger overseas Chinese and Indonesian society itself. The letter, signed by Mrs Katini Gurdi [Kartini Kurdi?; 卡蒂妮·古尔迪], Deputy Secretary of the Secretariat of the Central Council of Gerwani, said that these incidents were stirred up by racist counter-revolutionaries, with the aim of trying to block the implementation of the 'Economic Declaration' and of creating an unfavourable situation for the Republic of Indonesia, which is now struggling against old and new colonialism and imperialism headed by the United States. 'The Indonesian people, including women, firmly condemn all counter-revolutionary racist acts that obstruct the struggle of the Indonesian people. These acts damage the friendship between the Indonesian people and the great Chinese people, a friendship that was forged anew during Chairman Liu Shaoqi's recent visit to Indonesia. 'The Indonesian women under Gerwani regret the above-mentioned acts that endanger a section of the Chinese and Indonesian society itself. 'However, we believe that, because national unity with Nasakom at its core is growing stronger, and the friendship among the new emerging forces, especially between Indonesia and great China, continues to consolidate, any action of counter-revolutionary racism will in the end be defeated.' According to a Xinhua dispatch from Jakarta on the 4th: The Antara news agency reported today that on the night of 29 May counter-revolutionaries set fire at Tanjung Berlinking [Tanjung Beringin?] near Tebing Tinggi [直名丁宜] in North Sumatra, Indonesia, burning down 38 shops and homes of overseas Chinese and ethnic Chinese, causing losses of about 100 million rupiah and leaving 186 people homeless. Previously the rioters had twice set fires at this place but they were put out. This time the rioters started the fire with oil-soaked sacks, the fire could not be brought under control, and an unprecedented great fire resulted at this place. According to the Antara news agency, a counter-revolutionary provocation also occurred recently in Padang, West Sumatra.
