The rally, amid stormy and warm applause from the whole hall, adopted a message of support to the Vietnamese people (full text on page 3), paying the highest tribute and giving the firmest support to the people of South Vietnam, fighting heroically on the front line of the anti-US struggle, and to the whole Vietnamese people, and praising the victorious struggle of the South Vietnamese people for setting a glorious example for the oppressed nations and oppressed peoples of the whole world. The message of support said: 'The South Vietnamese people have not been taken in at all by the modern revisionists; they have not believed in "peaceful coexistence" with imperialism and in winning national liberation through "general and complete disarmament" as advocated by the modern revisionists. The revolutionary South Vietnamese people, thus armed ideologically, will surely overcome difficulties continuously, strengthen the revolutionary forces and win complete victory in the struggle.' Guo Moruo, Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and Chairman of the Chinese People's Committee for Defending World Peace, in his speech at the rally (full text on page 3), said that the stand of the Chinese people in consistently supporting the revolutionary struggles of oppressed peoples and oppressed nations is unshakeable. He also stressed: 'The patriotic and just struggle of the South Vietnamese people and the socialist countries support and help each other. The South Vietnamese people stand in the front line of the struggle against US imperialism; they not only defend the national interests of the Vietnamese people but also give powerful support to the socialist countries. It is the internationalist duty of the socialist countries to support the revolutionary struggle of the South Vietnamese people in all respects; socialist countries must never adopt a passive and negative attitude towards the liberation struggles of oppressed peoples and oppressed nations, still less sacrifice the interests of the national liberation struggle to make deals with US imperialism. To do so would not only directly damage the cause of liberation of the oppressed peoples and nations and violate the fundamental interests of the socialist camp and the international communist movement, but would also be detrimental to safeguarding world peace. This the revolutionary peoples of the whole world absolutely cannot permit.' Today's rally was held in the Great Hall of the People. Zhou Enlai, Vice-Chairman of the CCP Central Committee and Premier of the State Council, Chen Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CCP Central Committee and Vice-Premier of the State Council, Chen Shutong, Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, Burhan, Vice-Chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC, Fu Zuoyi and Cai Tingkai, Vice-Chairmen of the National Defence Council, and others attended the rally. Tran Tu Binh, Ambassador of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam to China, Nguyen Thi Binh and Ma Thi Chu [Ma Thi Chau?], representatives of the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam, and other Vietnamese friends attended by invitation. Friends from Asia, Africa, Latin America and countries of the world who are in Beijing were also invited to attend the rally. Among them were: Mrs Pardjani Pradono, head of the Indonesian women's delegation to China; Mrs Utomo, wife of the mayor of Solo [Surakarta], Indonesia; Paek Song-ok, head of the Korean complete-plant-equipment technical delegation; Kang Hak-su, head of the Korean pharmaceutical and medical-instrument industry study group; Kazuo Suzuki, standing member of the Japan Afro-Asian Solidarity Committee; Mrs Shashi Kala Sharma, Nepalese women's delegate; Mrs Zahara Ibrahim, Secretary of the Comoros National Liberation Movement; Mrs Priscilla Gumane [Kumani], Secretary for Women's Affairs of the Mozambique National Democratic Union; Mrs Ali Sultan, General Secretary of the Zanzibar National Democratic Women's Federation; Mrs Maria Augusta Tibiriçá Miranda, Brazilian women's delegate; the American writer Anna Louise Strong; and others. At 3 p.m. Premier Zhou Enlai and others accompanied the Vietnamese and other friends onto the platform. The whole hall rose and applauded warmly for several minutes. The rally was presided over by Liao Chengzhi, Chairman of the China Afro-Asian Solidarity Committee. In his opening remarks he pointed out that the Chinese people are close brothers of the Vietnamese people. US imperialism is our common enemy. At all times the Chinese people will stand firmly with their fraternal Vietnamese people and struggle to the end against US imperialism. He expressed firm confidence that, with the active support of all peace-loving countries and peoples, the anti-US patriotic and just struggle of the South Vietnamese people will certainly win final victory and the wish of the whole Vietnamese people to reunify their fatherland peacefully will certainly be realised. Liao Chengzhi also announced at the rally: the Chinese people warmly respond to the activities of the 'struggle week' held by the people of North Vietnam from 15 to 21 July, 'Oppose the US imperialist aggressors and their lackey, the Ngo Dinh Diem clique, give great support to the liberation struggle of our compatriots in the South, and demand peaceful reunification of the fatherland'; apart from Beijing, rallies and other activities will be held respectively in six cities: Guangzhou, Nanning, Kunming, Wuhan, Changsha and Shanghai. He said that this is a firm expression of the Chinese people's support for the just struggle of the Vietnamese people, and also a firm expression of the common hatred of the enemy and great unity of the Chinese and Vietnamese peoples. (1)(4) After Guo Moruo's speech, Ambassador Tran Tu Binh spoke amid warm applause (full text on page 3). In his speech he first strongly condemned the US government for trampling on the 1954 Geneva Agreements on the Vietnam question. He said that, owing to the intervention and aggression of US imperialism, our fatherland is still divided and the South Vietnamese people live in the suffering of the cruel war provoked by US imperialism. He said that the tense situation in South Vietnam today is a mirror clearly reflecting the aggressive and bellicose nature of US imperialism. A series of current facts all further show that US imperialism is the most dangerous enemy of the national liberation movement and of world peace. He said that Kennedy has recently talked a great deal about peace, putting on a show of loving peace, but his cunning arguments cannot conceal the aggressive and bellicose nature of US imperialism, nor deceive anyone; on the contrary, they will only make the peoples more vigilant. The Ambassador said that the South Vietnamese people, tested in long revolutionary struggle and with a high level of revolutionary consciousness, under the leadership of the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam, have launched a broad and incomparably powerful political and armed struggle, and are gradually thwarting the plots and actions of the US aggressors and putting the enemy in a passive predicament. The setbacks the US aggressors have already suffered foretell that US imperialism's policy of aggression in South Vietnam will end in complete bankruptcy. He said the Vietnamese people firmly believe that their just struggle for the independence, sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of their fatherland will certainly win glorious victory. The whole hall welcomed with thunderous applause Nguyen Thi Binh, representative of the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam, who spoke at the rally (full text on page 3). In it she strongly condemned US imperialism for tearing up the Geneva Agreements, trampling on the territory of South Vietnam, and plotting to turn South Vietnam into a new-style colony and military base of US imperialism. She said that the undeclared war waged by US imperialism in South Vietnam and its monstrous crimes show the nature of the imperialist ringleader and show that the aggression of US imperialism stops at nothing. Nguyen Thi Binh stressed that the great victories won in recent years, especially in the past year and more, have made the South Vietnamese people more confident in their own strength. We firmly believe that when a nation, even one with few people, has united and recognised the enemy, even though the enemy is the most powerful imperialism, it cannot destroy that nation. She expressed deep confidence that, however arduous and long the struggle of the South Vietnamese people may be, they will certainly drive the aggressors out of their land. Nguyen Thi Binh said finally that the South Vietnamese people have always paid attention to and cared about the revolution and construction of the Chinese people. The Chinese people's resolute struggle against imperialism, especially against US imperialism, is a glorious example for the struggle of the South Vietnamese people. The South Vietnamese people are willing to fight shoulder to shoulder with the Chinese people to drive out our common enemy, liberate Taiwan and liberate South Vietnam. The speeches of Guo Moruo, Tran Tu Binh and Nguyen Thi Binh aroused wave after wave of warm applause in the hall. After the speeches, more than ten thousand people in the hall raised their hands and unanimously adopted the message of support to the heroic Vietnamese people. Today's rally was jointly held by the Chinese People's Committee for Defending World Peace, the China Afro-Asian Solidarity Committee, the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, the All-China Women's Federation, the All-China Youth Federation, the All-China Students' Federation, the Chinese People's Association for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries, the Political Science and Law Association and the China-Vietnam Friendship Association.
