President Sukarno chairs meeting of the Supreme Operations Command; First Deputy Prime Minister Subandrio reports on the results of his visit to China; political parties and organisations hail the killing of the South Sulawesi rebel leader
Xinhua News Agency, Jakarta, 7th – According to the Antara news agency today, President Sukarno said yesterday at Bogor Palace: "In 1965 our confrontation with imperialism, especially with 'Malaysia', has better prospects." President Sukarno said this after the Supreme Operations Command [KOTI] had made reports on the progress of the campaign to smash "Malaysia" and on the results of the Indonesian delegation's visit to China. First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Subandrio told the press after the meeting that the reports had been made separately by the Chief of Staff of the Supreme Operations Command and by himself. A very detailed report was also made at the meeting on the elimination by the Indonesian armed forces in South Sulawesi of the rebel chieftain Kahar Muzakkar [Kahar Muzakkar]. The meeting was chaired by President Sukarno. The three Deputy Prime Ministers, the commanders of the army, navy, air force and police, and other senior officers and cabinet ministers attended.
Xinhua News Agency, Jakarta, 7th – Recently Indonesian political parties, mass organisations and newspapers have hailed the killing of the South Sulawesi rebel leader Kahar Muzakkar. A statement of the Central Committee of the Indonesian National Party [PNI], signed yesterday by its General Chairman Ali Sastroamidjojo [Ali Sastroamidjojo], said that the killing of the rebel leader would help the people of South Sulawesi to concentrate their efforts on carrying out the President's order of action to smash "Malaysia", a product of neo-colonialism. On the same day the League of Supporters of Indonesian Independence [IPKI] also issued a statement saying that the killing of the rebel leader would further strengthen the revolutionary forces at home, because Kahar Muzakkar had been an instrument of imperialist subversion against Indonesia. The All-Indonesian Central Organisation of Trade Unions [SOBSI], in the name of its 3.5 million members, cabled Army Commander Lieutenant-General Yani [Ahmad Yani], paying tribute to the patriotic action of all officers and men in South Sulawesi who killed the rebel leader, and demanding that the government reward the unit that killed the head of the rebel group. The Indonesian Youth and Students' Federation, the Indonesian Women's Movement Association [Gerwani], and the newspapers Api Pancasila [Indonesia "火炬报"; Api Pantjasila? – name uncertain] and Suluh Indonesia ["忠诚报"; name uncertain] also hailed this victory of the Indonesian army.
Xinhua News Agency, Jakarta, 5th – According to the Antara news agency today, on 3 February the Indonesian army, in a mopping-up operation in South Sulawesi, killed Kahar Muzakkar, the notorious leader of the "Islamic State movement" [Darul Islam/DI-TII] rebel group. In 1950, incited by imperialism, this rebel group had launched a rebellion in South Sulawesi against the Republic of Indonesia and engaged in terrorist activity, causing the local people enormous losses of life and property. The army had the support of the people in suppressing this rebel group. Some of Muzakkar's deputies and many of his followers had been arrested.
Xinhua News Agency, Jakarta, 6th – Bintang Timur [Eastern Star] of Indonesia said in an editorial today that if US and British imperialism dared to play with fire in Southeast Asia, the peoples of Indonesia, Indochina and the People's Republic of China would bring the history of imperialism in that region to an end. The paper sternly condemned the nuclear threats and "shows of force" by US and British imperialism in Southeast Asia. It said, "All this absolutely cannot frighten the people there; on the contrary, it will urge them to unite further and deal heavy blows to the enemy." The editorial said that US imperialism was preparing a large-scale "local war" in an attempt to maintain permanent control over Asia, especially Southeast Asia. At the same time, British imperialism was also massing heavy troops in Sabah and other areas around Indonesia, threatening Indonesia. It said, however, that the Indonesian people, together with the people of Indochina, were prepared to strike a heavy blow at US and British imperialism. Harian Rakjat [Harian Rakyat] said in an editorial yesterday that if the United States continued to harass Indonesia, and if British imperialism dared to attack Indonesia, "we are determined to give them a firm answer: eliminate all American enterprises in this country."
