President Sukarno stresses at a mass rally of ten thousand that the principles of the Bandung Conference must be adhered to; the Second Afro-Asian Conference must be a conference of unity against imperialism
Xinhua News Agency, Jakarta, 9th – President Sukarno said last night at a rally here celebrating the 15th anniversary of the founding of the Indonesian Women's Movement Association [Gerwani]: "The Second Afro-Asian Conference must be a conference against imperialism, a conference that unites all anti-imperialist forces." Sukarno told the audience of more than ten thousand that a week earlier he had asked Bouattoura [Bouattoura], special envoy of Algerian President Ben Bella, to convey to President Ben Bella: "The Second Afro-Asian Conference should be faithful to the principles of the First Afro-Asian Conference held in Bandung in 1955. What were the principles of that conference? The principle of the First Afro-Asian Conference was: to unite all anti-imperialist forces. This is the principle of struggle against imperialism, the principle of uniting all anti-imperialist forces of the Asian and African countries in order to eradicate imperialism." Sukarno said: "What was the most fundamental achievement of the First Afro-Asian Conference held in Bandung? It was the decision to struggle against imperialism, a struggle to eradicate imperialism in all its forms. I therefore asked Mr Bouattoura to convey to President Ben Bella that this must be adhered to. The Second Afro-Asian Conference should remain a conference against imperialism, a conference uniting all Asian-African anti-imperialist forces." Sukarno said that when the First Afro-Asian Conference was held, the imperialist newspapers said: let them meet, it is nothing but a tea party. "But at that conference we forged the participating countries into an extremely powerful alliance of anti-imperialist forces. Now that the Second Afro-Asian Conference is approaching, imperialism has begun to be frightened, scared and worried. The Bandung Conference was a great thing, and the Second Afro-Asian Conference, needless to say, even more so, because more countries will take part in the Second than in the First." Sukarno said: "If some countries want to withdraw from the Second Afro-Asian Conference because they want to support 'Malaysia', South Vietnam, South Korea and Israel, to support those countries and groups that accept imperialist aid, then let them do as they please! We shall continue to stand on the side of the countries with which we are truly united in the anti-imperialist struggle." Sukarno said that he would personally lead the Indonesian delegation, formed in the spirit of Nasakom, to the Second Afro-Asian Conference.
