Women of Asia and Africa, unite! – A record of the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Bandung Conference in Jakarta [Author: Zhang Qian]
The Chinese women's delegation of four had the honour of accepting the warm invitation of the Indonesian Women's Congress [Kowani] and Mrs Subandrio to make a friendly visit to Indonesia on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Afro-Asian Conference, and at the same time took part in the grand celebrations held in Indonesia. We arrived in Jakarta, the Indonesian capital, on 16 April, accompanying Premier Zhou Enlai and Vice-Premier Chen Yi. During the following ten-day visit Mrs Subandrio, despite her busy schedule, took meticulous care of us and entertained us warmly. Thanks to her careful arrangements we had many intimate gatherings and contacts with women from all walks of life in Jakarta and Bandung, which enhanced the sisterly friendship between Chinese and Indonesian women. As emissaries conveying the warm good wishes of hundreds of millions of Chinese women, our women's delegation, together with our sisters from the Asian and African countries, spent the common festival of Afro-Asian unity against imperialism. The impressions this visit left us will be unforgettable.
April in Jakarta had just entered the dry season. The clear sky and the calm Java Sea mirrored each other, sea and sky of one colour, translucent blue like lapis lazuli. We were indeed attracted by the beautiful natural scenery of this land of a thousand islands. But even more attractive was the solemn, grand and jubilant festive scene that filled the whole city. At Kemayoran Airport we saw armed forces drawn up to be reviewed; young women in a variety of Indonesian national costumes, each holding a silver bowl of flower petals, lined up on both sides of the red-carpeted pavement; and crowds waving flags and cheering a warm welcome, who waited at the airport practically from morning until night. Under the scorching sun, to the sound of roaring salvoes of cannon, they welcomed one Asian and African delegation after another. On the cornice of the white building facing the apron hung a banner reading: WELCOME AFRICAN, ASIAN COMRADES IN ARMS! I thought what profound meaning this slogan must hold for the many delegates from Asian and African countries who are waging anti-imperialist, anti-colonialist struggles to win and defend national independence and to throw off foreign interference, control and subversion!
Our Indonesian friends told us that the rainy season, lasting several months of the year, had only just ended there, so all the preparations for this large-scale celebration had been completed in a very short time. For instance, road workers repaired before the festival the roads eroded and damaged by the excessive rain, so as to ensure unobstructed traffic. On the road from the airport to the city centre many decorated arches had been erected, adorned with the words WELCOME or AA (Afro-Asian), repeatedly conveying greetings and congratulations to the guests. Artists, with their brushes, had painted vigorous pictures on huge roadside billboards and written bold, militant slogans that vividly expressed the firm conviction of more than two billion Asian and African people to strive together to sweep away imperialism, old and new colonialism and all reactionary and decadent forces, and to create a new world without any exploitation and oppression. As for the huge replicas of the badge of the 10th anniversary of the Afro-Asian Conference and the long strips of slogans fixed to tall buildings and fitted with neon lights, that was surely the work of construction workers and electricians skilled in working at height. At night these emblems and slogans shone brilliantly, creating a stirring sight! Wherever one looked there were flags flying, and at the main venues of the celebration one could see dozens of national flags of Asian and African countries tied to rows of flagpoles, fluttering in the wind. The Bung Karno Stadium [Gelora Bung Karno; "朋加诺体育场"] and the adjoining Senayan Sports Hall were the centre of the whole celebration; the opening ceremony of the celebration, the Afro-Asian arts performances, the mass rally of several hundred thousand people and the fireworks evening were all held there. The surroundings were brilliantly illuminated and had a particularly solemn and majestic air. In short, from these arrangements alone it is not hard to see how heavy a task our host country undertook in organising the celebration of the 10th anniversary. From Jakarta, Bogor and Bandung to Bali, millions of Indonesian people, including women and children, threw themselves into the celebrations with full enthusiasm and tireless effort. Whether at the mass rally of several hundred thousand, or at the grand scenes of welcome, parade and review, order was maintained from beginning to end and the mood of the crowds was high and ardent, leaving a deep impression and winning the general praise of the delegations attending. We express our boundless admiration and gratitude for the efforts and contributions made by the Indonesian government and people, under the leadership of President Sukarno, with such high fighting enthusiasm and active deeds, to promote the cause of Afro-Asian unity against imperialism, and we are also deeply elated by it.
During the celebration, the speeches made by President Sukarno, Prince Sihanouk and the representatives of the Asian and African countries, and the wide-ranging contacts and talks between Premier Zhou Enlai and the delegations of the Asian and African countries, reviewed and summarised the rapid development and victories of the surging anti-imperialist, anti-colonial struggles on the two continents of Asia and Africa over the past ten years. Ten years ago, leaders and statesmen of twenty-nine countries gathered together at the Afro-Asian Conference held in Bandung and drew up the Ten Principles of Bandung, reflecting the common demands of the Asian and African peoples, from which arose the world-famous Bandung spirit. Since then the Asian and African peoples, on the basis of the Ten Principles of Bandung, have strengthened unity and cooperation and, in the struggle against imperialism and colonialism and for winning and defending national independence, have supported and inspired one another and won one victory after another. In ten years more than thirty countries have won independence one after another. Today the flags of these countries have been placed in the hall of that former Afro-Asian Conference, now the "Provisional People's Consultative Assembly Building", arranged on the rostrum equally left and right with the flags of the countries that took part at that time. Some of these newly independent countries even sent delegations to celebrate with us the historic 10th anniversary of the Afro-Asian Conference. Does not this fact give the most vivid explanation of history! On this point, I think we may well regard this celebration as a review of the victorious assembly of the Asian and African peoples.
Of course, another side of the present situation must also be pointed out: US-led imperialism is stepping up its criminal activities of aggression, interference, control and subversion in the Asian and African regions. The flames of armed struggle of the oppressed nations burn from South Vietnam, Laos, North Kalimantan and South Yemen in Asia to the Congo, Angola, Mozambique, Portuguese Guinea and South Africa in Africa. Recently the tension created by US imperialism's military adventures and war blackmail in Vietnam has drawn the attention of the world's peoples. The speech of Premier Pham Van Dong of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam at the celebration forcefully exposed US imperialism's brutal aggression and all its shameful plots in Vietnam, and further aroused the Asian and African peoples' righteous indignation against the common enemy. Fifteen thousand volunteers in the Indonesian capital were reviewed by Premier Pham Van Dong. Vigorously and spiritedly they expressed to Premier Pham Van Dong their determination to support Vietnam's just patriotic struggle against the Americans, and vowed to be ready at any time to go to the Vietnamese front and fight shoulder to shoulder with the Vietnamese people. The anti-imperialist revolutionary struggle of the world's peoples is an indivisible whole, and the Asian and African peoples must further strengthen unity and unite with the progressive peoples of the world to face the enemy together. On this point, I think we may also regard this celebration as a new mass meeting at which the Asian and African peoples pledged themselves to battle.
President Sukarno said at the mass rally of several hundred thousand in Jakarta: Why hold such a grand mass rally to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Afro-Asian Conference? Because revolution is not the business of a few; every revolution must be a revolution of the people. The anti-imperialist, anti-colonial struggle is also a revolutionary struggle of the people, and only with the active participation of the broad masses can the enemy be defeated and victory won. President Sukarno pointed out very thoroughly the great significance of this celebration. The solemn, grand and jubilant festive celebration left an indelible impression in our hearts and inspired us to redouble our efforts and do everything possible to make the Second Afro-Asian Conference a success and win new victories. We firmly believe that the more than two billion Asian and African people will surely advance courageously along the revolutionary road of unity against imperialism, holding high the banner of the Bandung spirit and uniting with the revolutionary peoples of the whole world to struggle together until imperialism, colonialism and all reactionary and decadent forces in every form have been wiped from the face of the earth.
